      • Made from a single vineyard in cool-climate Beechworth, the 2010 Giaconda Warner Vineyard Shiraz is a powerhouse of red fruit, herbs and coffee. Complexity reigns, pulling the palate in so many opposite directions equally that one cannot help be hypnotised by it's magic. Now a 7 year old, its just started to dip its toe into a 15 year drinking window... and boy is it incredible.

      • The nose is profoundly deep with scents of herb, red fruits and coffee. A firm and more refined, tightly structured palate reflecting a cooler vintage. Exotic Rhone-like characters of wild herbs are developing as a counterpoint to the evident dark fruit. This continues the traditional Warner vineyard style and should offer good ageing potential.

        Tasted under both cork and screwcap seal at a retrospective of Giaconda wines held in early 2017. More black pepper here. Woodsmoke. Black cherry. Not a huge wine but it begs the word statuesque. Perfectly formed, supple tannin. If you wanted to know what Giaconda Shiraz is all about, this would be a great place to start. Cork-sealed likewise. Super Shiraz.

        Deep garnet-purple in colour. The 2010 Warner Vineyard Shiraz presents a wonderfully fragrant and complex nose of warm blackberries, wild blueberries and black raspberries with hints of pepper, dried Provencal herbs, cloves, aniseed, char-grilled meat and loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is both elegantly constructed and intense, with loads of black and red fruit flavour layers and a pleasant earthy and herbal streak. It is all framed by medium to firm rounded tannins as well as crisp acid and finishes with great persistence.

        Lean, greenish but likely to evolve slowly towards a fine grained, restrained style reflective of the season. Its spicy, musky fragrance of red plums, cranberries, raspberries and dusty, cedary oak reveals scents of white pepper and dried herbs, clove and cinnamon, mint and forest floor. Fine and reserved, with a delicate forward presence of small red and black berries backed by a chalky spine, it finishes with good but not great length, with a slightly sappy and herbal edge.

        Elegant and tightly focused, this dusty, faintly herbal shiraz has the length and structure to flesh out nicely. Its retrained smoky and floral bouquet of dark berries, cherries, plums and cedar/chocolate oak is lifted by a meaty presence of animal hide and ethereal, musky spices. Long and supple, with a retrained presence of vibrant, faintly sour-edged fruit, it finishes with a gentle extract, fresh acids and a lingering fruitfulness.

        Reflective of a warmer, riper season, this brooding shiraz is going to need plenty of time. Its peppery, spicy bouquet of deep red and black fruits, dark chocolate and gamey, cedary oak reveals hints of musk, blueberries and briar. Backed by powerful, fine-grained savoury oak, it's medium to full-bodied but densely packed with fruit and textural elements. Long and firm, still rather closed, it slowly reveals the extent of its length and depth, finishing meaty and savoury, but with a profound, lingering core of black and red fruits still tightly wound around its fine, grainy tannins.

        Powerful, meaty and savoury, this substantial, complex and deeply layered shiraz slowly unfolds its concentrated expression of blackberry, blueberry, dark plum and cassis like flavour beneath a spicy, musky perfume of cracked pepper, smoked meats and cinnamon. It steadily becomes more pungent, opulent and accessible, as its firm, chalky palate yields more fruit sweetness and depth with aeration. Exceptionally long and complete — it's a statement of sophisticated winemaking intent. And it needs time!

        Stunning soil- and site-driven purity, graphite and dark minerals, some smoke, a little tar; this is a savoury and complex shiraz with intense dried dark plum - sanguine almost. Starts out supple and builds meaty complexity as plum flavours unfurl, minerals and spice, the tannins spiral through the finish. Striking and soulful.

        A massively proportioned shiraz by the standards of this vineyard, and one whose meaty ripeness and treatment with bruising, charry oak simply demands time in the cellar. It opens with exaggerated slowness to reveal deep, brooding, briary and brambly fruit and smoky, charcuterie-iike undertones. Closed down to the point of lacking personality at present, it ultimately reveals deep, spicy, seamless qualities and a superb, long-term structure. Don't be misled by its raw smokiness if you open it too early — simply wait a day or three.

        Heady, musky and exotically spiced, its ethereal and peppery perfume of blackberries, dark plums, cassis and mocha/dark chocolate oak has a meaty ripeness and an undercurrent of dried herbs. Full to medium in weight, its bright, briary flavours of sour-edged blackberries and dark plums reveal smoky, rustic and charcuterie-like nuances and spicy suggestions of licorice. The tannins are fine, drying and bony. Very seamless and balanced, It's complete, complex and savoury, with more than a suggestion of Hermitage.
