      2015 Bellarmine Wines Pemberton Riesling Dry Mike Bennie 94
      • The driest Riesling in the Bellarmine range, this has lovely crystalline acidity and a purity to it that is really rather beguiling. It's an oddity in the scheme of things though this wine, for Pemberton is better known for it's Pinot and Chardonnay than its Riesling. Regardless this is genuinely a fabulous Riesling.

        Nose: Floral, "little white flowers", lime and spice

        Palate: Clean well-balanced, full of citrus and floral flavours with minerality, good length of flavour and a crisp clean finish

        From 20 hectares of vines established in 2000. Pemberton hasn’t quite leapt out of the shadows, but there’s plenty of good/interesting wine from the region. Bellarmine make a suite of varying sweetness rieslings, but this is the dry one. Complex feel to the fragrance – gentle honey notes over layers of tropical and citrus fruits, sniff of ginger, touch of spicy lemongrass. Has great energy in the palate, light, clean, but delicate with stipple points of acid, tangy fruit and light chalky texture. Good intensity and zest. Really pleasing wine here.

        This is one of the most consistent rieslings on the market today - and one of the very best. Lime and apple blossom aromas translate into an intense, lime juice-driven palate of prodigious length and intensity. While this version of Bellarmine's Riesling normally needs a few years to open up, this requires no such discipline.

        Light straw-green; the flowery, aromatic bouquet of lemon and lime blossom leads into a seductively juicy palate, with the first hints of the honey that will appear in a few years' time, ultimately followed by toast. But if you wish to drink it right now, go for it.

        Following the enforced discontinuance of ‘Auslese’ for the sweetest of its three rieslings, the Bellarmine hierarchy (in rising levels of sweetness) is Riesling Dry, Half Dry and Select. The floral bouquet has multi-blossom aromas with a hint of spice, the palate with lime juice flavours verging on tropical, the finish with perfect acid balance and freshness.

The keen acid has harnessed the crisp spicy fruit beautifully. The flavour profile lingers through to a very long finish,. Not your usual Australian style, but an excellent alternative.Ê

        These guys have been nailing some might impressive rieslings in recent years including a gorgeous sweeter style. This is the drier version and it's superb. Lovely floral spicy notes on the nose with just a little cold pebbly character. The palate is beautifully dry but a surprising texture held superbly by the delicate acid.
