2011 Geoff Merrill Botham Merrill Willis Chardonnay
Additional Cases: $0
- Value at its finest here - a ripping Chardonnay with a few years in the bottle, ready for tonight's dinner table! While our old pal Geoff Merrill is a dab hand with his McLaren Vale Shiraz and Grenache, his white wines - particularly the Chardonnays - are just as good. This is a rounded, peach scented style with mouth filling fruit flavour and a remarkably elegant finish, thanks to the cool 2011 vintage. A seafood special this one. 80
The colour is a pale straw still with youthful green hues. The aroma shows delicate lemon and lime with hints of melon and nectarine. Subtle toast, cashew and straw oak notes add depth and complexity. The palate is fine and delicately structured with fresh citrus and melon on the mid palate finishing on a clean stone fruit note.
The 2011 vintage was one many would probably like to forget!! During the crucial time for grape growing in McLaren Vale (January to March), we experienced double the average rainfall (55.5mm) with falls for the three months totalling 116.4mm. The lead up to the vintage was actually very good. Soaking rains in winter and into spring and mild temperatures in early summer meant a nice slow accumulation of flavours which we managed to capture in the majority of the fruit we took in, with this Chardonnay being no exception.
The 2011 Chardonnay was partly fermented and matured in French oak Hogsheads prior to bottling. The resultant wine displays fresh melon, citrus and stone fruit characters with lovely depth and complexity, subtle oak and a crisp clean finish.
