      • If you were to pick a Riesling from anywhere in Australia, where would you head? We might be biased but the Clare Valley is an obvious choice and the Knappstein winery have had well over a century of practice. Classic Clare Valley Riesling aromas of citrus and a hint of florals before a palate dominant in lemon and lime intensity. There’s a smart mineral structure that drives it all along before zesty acids provide a balanced and long finish.

      • The 2011 Knappstein Hand Picked Riesling shows lifted citrus aromas with distinct notes of slate and spice. The palate displays the classic Watervale characters of lemon and lime with a fine mineral structure. Although showing wonderful depth of flavour the Riesling wines from Knappstein in 2011 show a distinct delicacy and liveliness on the palate. The natural acid level provides the wine's backbone and palate line and is perfectly balanced even in the wine's youth. Knappstein's commitment to hand picking ensures we produce a delicate wine displaying excellent purity of flavours and textures.
      • Tyson Stelzer says:

Some entry-level Clare rieslings suffered in this challenging season, making pristine wines such as this all the more noteworthy. A sniper-precise expression of lemon lime and granny smith apples.

        Jeremy Oliver says:

A powerful medium-term riesling with assertive minerality. Its bouquet of delicate citrus aromas, bath salts and lemon sherbet precedes a forward and deeply concentrated palate whose deep fruitfulness and fine dusty texture drive strongly towards an austere, slatey finish.

        Rob Geddes MW says:

Lovely balance and delicacy with complexity according to the year floral fruit and richness with underlying lime intensity and mouth watering chalky texture. Always a firm ending resolute with charming apricot citrus or lime flavours.

        Best Drinking: To 2017

        Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says:

Knappstein is one of Clare’s most consistently pristine entry-level rieslings and 2012 is one of the greats. Precise lime juice, granny smith apple and lemon blossom carry seamlessly from refined bouquet through a palate of brilliant intensity, unreserved focus and incredible persistence. Layers of chalky mineral structure are bolstered with a touch of subtle, well-gauged phenolic grip.

        Nick Stock (2012 Vintage) says:

Very impressive florals on offer, with intense lime citrus and a lemony edge, grapefruit, minerals and stone fruits too. The palate has lovely, dense acidity, crunchy and even. Terrific flow and balance, great flavour depth here.

Rob Geddes MW (2012 Vintage) says:

What an aroma, initially pungent floral with unfolding floral, rose, red apple with a cinnamon edge in the back ground. This smells of the “essential oils” of Riesling from the Watervale end of Clare Valley. There is plenty of ripe fruit to cover the 2012 acidity and the mouth feel and texture is silky with long and beautifully even flavours, juicy and pure with the cinnamon spice returning to finish. The fruit is very obvious and intense and it’s a short term wine. This is as close to decadent as Clare Riesling can become! If this wine was book it would be unputdownable.

        James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says:

Pale straw-green; a very good example of a great vintage for Clare Valley Riesling, winning the title of Wine of the Year at the SA Wine Awards; has multiple layers of lime/citrus fruit without any phenolic static. Delicious now or in 10 or 20 years.

        Best Drinking: To 2027

        Jeremy Oliver (2012 Vintage) says:

Charmingly balanced, long and marginally sweet, this brightly lit young riesling has a faintly slatey and mineral fragrance of of green apple and lemon juice. Backed by a fine chalkiness, it's long and vibrant, with bright apple and lime juice flavours finishing with focus and a harmnonious marriage of acidity and a faint sweetness.

        Tyson Stelzer (2010 Vintage) says:

Riesling’s rapier-like spine too much for you? 2010 to the rescue! Generous, soft and more approachable to drink young, there are rich notes of guava and honeydew under this wine’s lime blossom perfume, finishing with sufficient zesty freshness to keep the purists at ease. $15 at Kemeny’s & Dan’s.

        James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says:

Light straw-green; has many of the characters of the Ackland Vineyard, but with an extra layer of juicy citrus fruit that caresses the mouth, and persists well into the finish and aftertaste.

        Australian Wine Companion 2012 2011

        Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says:

Quite possibly tasted while in the hole typically encountered with adolescent riesling, this floral and chalky young wine presently lacks genuine length and expression. Scented with aromas of lemon, apple and lime juice, it's rather round and forward, with pear-like flavour wrapped in lemony acids, but remains short of emphasis. A candidate for improvement.

        The Australian Wine Annual 2012

Rob Geddes MW (2010 Vintage) says:

Lovely balance and delicacy with complexity according to the year floral fruit and richness with underlying lime intensity and mouth watering chalky texture. Always a firm ending resolute with charming apricot citrus or lime flavours.

        Rob Geddes MW

        Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says:

This makes a really complete impression, even at this early stage in its life, and is a ringing endorsement for the quality of the 2009 vintage in Clare. It heads into richer, tinned fruit territory, pears and peaches, with a fine, sizzling acidity underneath keeping every hair in place.

The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010 2009

        James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says:

The bouquet is as yet restrained, but the very lively, juicy, lime-accented palate promises much for the future; great finish and aftertaste.

        Australian Wine Companion 2011 2010

Rob Geddes MW (2009 Vintage) says:

Lovely balance and delicacy with complexity according to the year floral fruit and richness with underlying lime intensity and mouth watering chalky texture. Always a firm ending resolute with charming apricot citrus or lime flavours.

        Rob Geddes MW

        Jeremy Oliver (2008 Vintage) says:

An honest, but unspectacular riesling with a floral, citrusy aroma of medium intensity. It's backed by minerally and chalky influences but its lime juice notes lack genuine freshness and penetration. It's steely and austere, with a moderately long and chalky palate whose initially intense limey flavours fall away a little towards the finish. Competent, but lacks genuine focus and freshness.

        Australian Wine Annual 2010 2009

        James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says:

Gently perfumed blossom and spice leads into a tightly focused palate; lime and lemon juice flavours run through the long finish; delicious wine.

        Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009

        James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says:

A relatively subdued bouquet, the palate with good structure and classic Clare riesling flavours, but held in check by the vintage.

        Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008

        Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says:

Slightly dull and baked, with highly accentuated, candied and citrusy aromas of limejuice, lemon rind and minerals. Its generous, rather tangy palate of lime and lemon flavour offers reasonable length of fruit before a long, steely finish, but lacks sufficient freshness and brightness for a higher rating.

        Australian Wine Annual 2009 2008

        James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says:

Unusually soft and generous when 12 months old; tropical lime and spice flavours developing early.

        Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007

        Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says:

Toasty, oily and fast-developing, this musky and rather cooked riesling delivers fresh lime and lemon flavour, but tends to lack shape and focus. It's broad and quite phenolic, with a minerality that its candied fruit struggles to match.

        Australian Wine Annual 2008 2007

        James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says:

Ripe, complex and mouthfilling; ripe apple through to tropical fruit, with balancing acidity.

        Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006

        Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says:

A savoury quite heavily worked riesling with delicate, floral and lime juice aromas backed by stony, earthy and slightly reductive nuances of wet slate and talcum powder. It's generously flavoured, with a succulent and chewy palate of apple, pear and lime flavours that becomes fractionally coarse and viscous towards its slightly hot and cooked finish. Lacks its usual freshness.

        Australian Wine Annual 2007 2006

        James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says:

Spicily fragrant; very delicate, almost feather-light, but with a lovely, long finish.

        Australian Wine Companion 2006 2005

        Jeremy Oliver (2004 Vintage) says:

A punchy up-front Clare riesling whose moderately intense lemon juice and honeysuckle fragrance precedes a slightly candied and juicy, but long and austere palate of texture and dryness.

        Australian Wine Annual 2006 2005

        Jeremy Oliver (2003 Vintage) says:

Spicy, tightly focused aromas of apple, pear and flowers are fresh and vibrant. Bursting with clear, concentrated riesling flavour, it's long and chalky with a refreshing lemon/lime finish.

        Australian Wine Annual 2005 2004

        James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says:

Solid, powerful, compact; rich, ripe fruit.

        Australian Wine Companion 2005 2004

        James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says:

Medium yellow-green; the slightly broad and certainly full and ripe bouquet is mirrored by the palate, which has abundant flavour but lacks focus. The 2002 Clare Rieslings do fall into distinct groups.

        Australian Wine Companion 2004 2003

Rob Geddes MW (2002 Vintage) says:

Buttercup yellow as a 10 year old. Buttery creamed honeyed fruit lushness and then toast. Good entry and flow and still a core of freshness on the palate a very complete wine with the toast showing 10 seconds after spitting.

        Rob Geddes MW

        James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says:

Light to medium green-yellow; the bouquet is complex, with some spicy characters which seem to be yeast-influenced, and which intensify on the palate, interfering with the varietal fruit flavour. Stelvin-capped.

        Australian Wine Companion 2003 2002

        James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says:

Light yellow-green; a fragrant and spicy bouquet with some mineral and subliminal lime aromas. A wine which begs for time in the bottle, with a very tight mineral- and spice-flavoured palate and a dry finish.

        Australian Wine Companion 2001 2001

        James Halliday (1997 Vintage) says:

Light to medium yellow-green; an attractively rich bouquet with sweet citrus aromas; a marvellously balanced and modulated wine in the mouth, with abundant mid-palate lemony fruit followed by a fine, dry, lingering but not phenolic finish.
