      • This fuller-bodied style of shiraz from an excellent year would be just the thing with that oxtail casserole you are thinking of cooking. It's a smooth, voluptuous style that has seen minimal oak, and shows an abundance of black currants on the nose and palate, with hints of purple florals and mint. It's all wrapped up in bright acidity and fine but subtly grippy tannins, leading to a rich, lingering finish. Excellent at the price, and should kick on for another 4 to 5 years.

      • The Lodge Hill Shiraz vineyard, on the Clare Valley’s eastern ranges, has soils of rich, chocolatey loam over almost vertical sheets of rock. The cracks between the rock have filled with soil, providing passage for the vine roots and free drainage - the ideal environment for low-yielding Shiraz vines.

Sight: This wine is a deep red with a bright magenta hue

Aromas: Aromatically it offers bright mixed berry and plum, with an overlay of garden herbs, violet florals a touch of clove spice

How it tastes: The palate is medium bodied and dominated by lively burst of berry fruits and framed by fine, powdery tannins. Juicy plum and blackberry flavours persist through the finish, with sweet spice and florals to close

This wine is ideally suited to good food, good friends and good conversation.

        Alc/vol: 14.0%

      • James Halliday (2013 Vintage) says:

Full crimson-purple; the back label proclaims that the Lodge Hill Vineyard is the highest in the Clare Valley at 440m (it isn't), and the wine has cool-grown nuances in its bloodstream; jet black fruits have rivulets of licorice, pepper and spice with banks of fine, savoury tannins.

        Best Drinking: By 2033

        James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says:

Totally delicious, with a spring in its step more frequently encountered in cool climate Shiraz; its fruit flavours span blood plum, red cherry and mulberry, complexed by spice and garden herbs, the tannins fine and supple. Drink to 2027.

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2015 Reviews

        Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says:

Minty aromas of fresh cassis raspberries, blackberies and light cedar/vanilla oak backed by nuances of cola and dried herbs precede a medium to full-bodied palate. Underpinned by loose-knit chalky tannins, its vibrant presence of fresh black and red fruits is tightly knit with cedary oak, finishing with length and focus.

The Australian Wine Annual 2014 Edition 2014

        Tyson Stelzer (2010 Vintage) says:

One of the Clare's highest vineyards yields a shiraz of bright fruit presence and structural definition. Varietal and regional notes of pepper and mint abound. It will age, too!

        Wine 100 Reviews, April 2012

        Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says:

One of the highest shiraz vineyards in Clare has produced a rich, rounded, drink-now wine that's loaded with blueberries, plums, cherries and dark choc oak.

        Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says:

There's a wealth of ripe plum fruit in this fresh and dark-purple shiraz; it makes for a familiar and attractive style - smells generous. Smooth tannins sweep wide, creating plenty of mid-palate shape; silky purple-cherry and raspberry flavours slide effortlessly throughout. Mocha-oak kick to close.

        The Good Wine Guide 2012

        James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says:

Good, deep colour; at 480 m, the Lodge Hill Vineyard is one of the highest in the Clare Valley, and the wine has more spicy/ savoury characters than usual in the region; the medium- to full-bodied palate has good texture and structure to its black fruit flavours.

        Australian Wine Companion 2011 2010

Rob Geddes MW (2008 Vintage) says:

Not for the faint-hearted, these very ripe wines have huge generosity of fruit flavours in a rich frame.

        Australian Wine Vintages 2010

        Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says:

At an elevation of 480 metres, the Lodge Hill Vineyard delivers cool, peppery character in this Clare Valley shiraz, with plenty of fine berry fruits and a nice spicy side too. The palate is juicy and supple; tannins sheet neatly across the palate, carrying plum and berry fruit flavour, finishing in fine, elegant and balanced form.

The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010 2009

        James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says:

A rich and multi-layered full-bodied shiraz, with an array of black fruits, licorice and dark chocolate; fine but persistent tannins to finish. Striped screwcap a design feature that works well.

        Australian Wine Companion 2011 2010

        Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says:

Generous and juicy, this sweet-fruited and spicy young shiraz presents a fresh, peppery aroma of blackberry confiture and sweet chocolate/vanilla oak. Juicy as a jujube, its rather polished but luscious presence of palate-staining flavour is underpinned by a firm but pliant undercarriage, finishing with length and refreshing acidity.

        Australian Wine Vintages 2010 2009

        James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says:

Very concentrated, almost essency/luscious blackberry fruit with a light briny edge; highly polished and quite chewy on the finish. Value.

        Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008

        Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says:

Surprisingly elegant, with a brambly, smoky presence of blackberries, cassis and plums, charcuterie meats, dark chocolate and briar backed by spicy, peppery notes. It's smooth and polished, with tightly integrated and evenly balanced sour-edged fruit, sweet oak and fine, bony tannins. It handles its 15% alcohol without being overcooked or dehydrated, building towards a substantial finish of lingering plum and blueberry fruit.

        Australian Wine Vintages 2010

        James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says:

Strong colour; blackberry, spice plus touches of prune and mint; a typical Jim Barry shiraz: big, dense, chewy and ripe

        Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007

        Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says:

A short to medium term and slightly jammy red whose pleasingly fresh, briary flavours of blackberries, cassis and dark plums are backed by mocha/coconut oak, suggestions of choc-mint, cloves and cinnamon. Full to medium weight, it's smooth, supple and rather polished, with an intense, approachable palate underpinned by fine, supple and loose-knit tannin.

        Australian Wine Annual 2008 2007

        James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says:

Good hue; an aromatic spice, cherry and blackberry bouquet; medium-bodied; lively, juicy red and black fruits; attractive style.

        Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006

        Jeremy Oliver (2004 Vintage) says:

Supple, smooth and early-drinking, this fruity, spicy and short-term shiraz has a lightly herbal, violet like and minty aroma of cranberries, red plums and redcurrants. Framed by a fine and approachable cut of tannin, its vibrant and juicy palate of black and red berries, plums and restrained cedar/vanilla oak is backed by nuances of white pepper.

        Australian Wine Annual 2007 2006

        James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says:

Lots of upfront, smooth, black fruits, then tails off somewhat.

        Australian Wine Companion 2006 2005

        Jeremy Oliver (2003 Vintage) says:

A very ripe and generous shiraz that easily carries its 15.5% alcohol while its fruit remains bright and lively. There's some meaty, musky and ultra-ripe currant and prune-like aromas lifted by sweet vanilla and smoky oak, while the palate reveals more purity and vitality. Smooth and silky, its deep minty flavours of cassis, blackberries and dark plums are framed by moderately firm tannins and knit tightly around sweet, lightly charry vanilla oak. There's just a hint of cooked fruit at the finish.

        Australian Wine Annual 2006 2005

        James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says:

Opaque colour; powerful blackberry, black olive and earth aromas; layer upon layer of black fruit flavours, but not extractive.

        Australian Wine Companion 2005 2004

Rob Geddes MW (2002 Vintage) says:

Not for the faint-hearted, these very ripe wines have huge generosity of fruit flavours in a rich frame.
