2014 Pikes Eastside Shiraz
Additional Cases: $0
- The Pikes family continue to honour the rich tradition of winemaking passed down by their forebears and here they turn their hands to the distinctive Clare Valley Shiraz. Blackberry, plum and dark chocolate aromas are prominent as well as a regional lick of licorice with a hint of charry oak. This is classic Clare Valley Shiraz with intense fruit, dark chocolate and silky tannins on the finish. It’s structured, silky and sublime and will age very well in the next decade. 80
Colour: Deep red
Aroma: Ripe plum and black cherry fruit with hints of mocha, graphite and some spicy notes as well. A nice little touch of charry French oak in the background mix.
Palate: Medium bodied with the ripe, dark fruits to the fore with balanced acidity and savoury tannins giving length and structure to the wine.
Summary: The Clare Valley does tend to live in the shadow of our southern colleagues in the Barossa and McLaren Vale a little when it comes to Shiraz , but we produce gorgeous medium bodied wines year after year. Delicious to drink now and the next 7 -10 years. Try this with a hearty beef & stout stew.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says:“
Bright, clear crimson-purple; a remarkably elegant wine in the context of the Clare Valley, brimming with fresh red berry fruits, finely drawn tannins and fresh acidity, oak incidental to the main play, alcohol totally irrelevant.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says:“
Very ripe, but with a spicy, rather closed bouquet whose restrained aromas of black and red berries are knit with cedary oak and backed by earthy, meaty complexity. Smooth and supple, its pastille-like presence of blackberries: raspberries and redcurrants is tightly knit with sweet vanilla oak and supported by fine, gentle tannin. It finishes with a lingering depth of fruit, licorice and a hint of spirit.

A smooth, soft and supple shiraz likely to reveal more mint and menthol character as it ages. Its heady fragrance of violets, cassis, raspberries and redcurrants has a spicy, peppery aspect of cloves and cinnamon. Backed by slightly toasty cedar/vanilla oak, It's a full to medium weight Australian burgundy style whose spicy ripe black and red berry flavours, pepper and spice overlie a powdery chassis of pliant tannins.
