2015 Off The Books Heathcote Shiraz Sam Kim 94 Campbell Mattinson 90
      • Handpicked from a 40-year-old vineyard on primo Heathcote Cambrian soils, and given 10 months in large French oak for structure, this Shiraz is an absolute riot of juicy Heathcote Shiraz delights. Think purple berries as far as the eye can see.

        Oh yeah, it's juicy.

But don't just take our word for it. Kiwi wine writer Sam Kim gave this 94 points and was a big fan. Closer to home, Campbell Mattinson called this 'the smooth talker at the table' and a 'big-ish Red, done well' giving it 90 points.

      • Off The Books shouldn’t happen…but it does. Every year parcels become available we can’t say no to… Every year special ferments demand individual attention… Every year our love of making great wine overrides rational planning… We never want to see amazing wine blended away so every year small parcels of wine just happen… and Off The Books is our way of bringing these gems to life.

Winemaking: Sourced from a low-yielding forty year old vineyard situated on Heathcote's famed Cambrian soils that are cropped at under 2 tonnes an acre. Hand-picked and then primarily de-stemmed before open fermentation with twice daily pump-overs and 20% whole bunch. Matured in large format French oak for 10 months before bottling.

2015 Vintage: A close to ideal vintage. Good winter and moderate rainfall throughout spring, along with warm spring temperatures, saw much better yields in all varieties than in 2014. Warm but not extreme temperatures continued into summer and meant a very early start to harvest. A dry March, with cool overnight temperatures, kept disease pressure low and allowed grapes to retain excellent natural acidity.

Tasting Note: Vivid red / purple in colour with a ripe and inviting nose highlighting aromas of blackberries, blood plums and chocolatey oak. The palate is intensely flavoured and expansive with flavours of dark fruits and boysenberries highlighted by lifted violets and peppery spice; all wrapped in fine tannins. An expressive and fruit driven wine that will increase in character and complexity with medium term cellaring.

        Alc/vol: 13.5%

      • Campbell Mattinson says:

Heathcote Shiraz fermented in open pots and aged in large format French oak. Bold and sweet with blackberried fruit booming through the palate. A mouthful of red wine with little oak flavour to speak of, but plenty of ‘smoothness’ in texture terms. It’s the smooth talker at the table. Clove, mint and spice notes make minor plays; the rage of berries holds the floor. A big-ish red, done well.

        Best Drinking: 2016 - 2021
