2007 Geoff Merrill Pimpala Vineyard MV Cabernet Merlot

Cracka Value Rating

Cracka Review

Big and bold - as you’d expect from the Vale - this has layers of plush blackberry and leafy varietal fruit, now lifted by some cedary, cigar box aged complexity. It is at the absolute peak of its powers, but with plenty of tannins left to ensure it will get even better over the next decade. Mature McLaren Vale Cabernet does not get much better than this.

Winemaker's Notes

The Pimpala Vineyard is a small 3 acre vineyard surrounding the Mount Hurtle winery. The vineyard was planted in 1985 to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (Reynella Clone) and 40% Merlot. Both the Cabernet and the Merlot are picked and processed together, even though they ripen at slightly different times. This adds finesse and complexity to the wine and a uniqueness you won’t find anywhere else!

Winemaker's Notes: Deep mahogany with brick red hues typical of mature Cabernet blends. The aroma shows great Cabernet notes of tomato leaf, chocolate, earth and capsicum with deeper characters of fruitcake, spice and savoury leather from Merlot adding complexity and depth. The palate is exceptionally well structured with excellent tannins and acidity providing a rigid backbone and wonderfully developed fruit characters adding weight and flesh. This wine will also continue to benefit from bottle maturation. A perfect accompaniment with a rich red meat or oily pasta.

Vintage Information: The 2007 Vintage was affected by of one of the worst droughts seen for a very long time. Consequently yields were down dramatically. This has had the effect of concentrating the fruit flavours relative to other years. Normally late varieties such as Merlot were picked earlier resulting in some interesting fruit flavours, tight tannin and acid structures. The low yields ensured some high quality wines were made.

Variety: Cabernet (60%), Merlot (40%)

Alc/vol: 14.5%
