    This 2008 Fireblock Watervale Riesling has all of the magical contrasts that make bottle-aged Clare Riesling great, just at a trend-defying price.

    It comes to us from a real hidden gem of a vineyard - a block planted in Watervale way back in 1926 that is famously bone-dry, producing some of the most concentrated fruit around.

    What that ancient plot has delivered here is a wine that would have been a limey beast in its youth, but now, at nine-years-old, is in it's lightly toasty prime, with plenty of primary fruit complemented by the honeyed softness of bottle age. A delicious Riesling in great form.

    Pale gold. Wet stone, lime, green apple and mint on the nose, with a smoky note of kerosene coming up with air. Dry, linear and tangy, offering vivid citrus and orchard fruit flavours and a subtle herbal quality. Finishes with refreshing mineral bite and very good, spicy persistence.

    winemaker's notes

    Delicate but full flavoured, drinking well young, yet with ageing potential.

    The vineyard is situated on the hillside overlooking the village of Watervale, in South Australia’s Clare Valley. It adjoins the old railway station and goods yard. In the 1980s the railway line was pulled up, and its path is now the ‘Riesling Trail’ walking track. It was part of a large grazing property. When the railway came in 1923, it was feared that sparks from steam locomotives may start bushfires, and so the land adjoining the railway line was excised from the grazing property, and sold with the condition that it be used for establishing vineyard.

    Vintage occurs in March and April, sometimes early May. The Riesling is first off, and the fruit is taken to the O’Leary Walker winery, a kilometre away. The wines are made by David O’Leary and Nick Walker.

    The Riesling grapes make a 100% varietal. Only the free run juice is used.

    Our aim is to grow the best quality fruit, and to produce wines of the highest quality.
