2010 Coriole Vita Reserve Sangiovese
Sangiovese has been an unsung hero for Coriole. They planted it in 1985, so they have a fair bit of experience with this Italian grape. Aromas of red cherries, hedgerow berries, and hints of soft spice adorn the nose. The palate is medium-boded and slightly earthy savoury, with licks of choc-cherry and toasty oak, mellow tannins, and a smooth finish. This would be great with a nice ragu.
Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole Vineyards with the first plantings in 1985. It provided a contrasting style to Shiraz, the great tradition of McLaren Vale. It has proven to be ideally suited to the warm maritime climate of the region. The Vita is a selection of the best performing Sangiovese vineyard. Coriole has many small vineyards of different clones and soils. Interestingly different vintages favour different vineyards. Vita is a small bottling that is only produced in exceptional vintages.
