Miss this Merrill at your peril! If you love rich and opulent Cabernet then this has your name all over it. It’s from the McLaren Vale where grapes enjoy warm days and cool breezes at night, so flavour is maximised until all that is delivered is regional purity in every glass. This Cabernet from Geoff Merrill has seen the advantage of being left to age for a few years before release, so it’s ready to drink now or can be cellared in the short term. Very regional with menthol, mint, capsicum and olive all leading to a fleshy, structured palate with well balanced acids.
James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Rich, ripe and varietal cassis aromas, with mocha and a suggestion of cedar lurking beneath the generous swathe of black fruit; the palate is generous, yet remains focused and poised, and while at the big end of town, is incredibly long and complex.Australian Wine Companion 2012 2011
James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
A generous and juicy wine, the rich, dark chocolate-accented McLaren Vale component balanced by Coonawarra red and blackcurrant fruit; good line and mouthfeelAustralian Wine Companion 2010 2009
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Marked by utterly atypical (for Geoff Merrill) dry tannins; the fruit is a mix of blackcurrant, leaf and earthy/ dark chocolate notes; could settle down with further bottle age.Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
The colour is a deep red with ruby hues and great depth. The aroma really displays the best of both regions. Chocolate, ripe berries and black currant from McLaren Vale and menthol, earth and tomato leaf from Coonawarra. These aromas spill over to the palate which is full, rich and tightly structured resulting in an excellent example of Cabernet Sauvignon which will continue to gather complexity in the bottle over the next 5-8 years.
