The Pimpala Vineyard is a small 3 acre vineyard surrounding the Mount Hurtle winery. The vineyard was planted in 1985 to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (Reynella Clone) and 40% Merlot. Both the Cabernet and the Merlot are picked and processed together, even though they ripen at slightly different times. This adds finesse and complexity to the wine and a uniqueness you won’t find anywhere else!
Winemakers Notes: The colour is rich and deep, hinting at the experience to come. The aroma is most definitely strong in Cabernet, with mint, menthol, black olive and chocolate coming forward. Complex earthy and herbaceous notes blend with cedar and leather making this a very interesting wine indeed. The palate is full of life, displaying tight, bright, intense fruit bound with fleshy muscular tannins. Balanced acidity brings it to a well orchestrated finish.
Although this wine is seven years old at the time of tasting, it is still very much in its youth and will greatly reward those with patience. Cellar for another 5-8 years with confidence.
Vintage Information: The 2010 season got off to a shaky start with a brief burst of heat in November 2009, which adversely affected flowering in some varieties. Good preceding winter and spring rains set up the vines with good soil moisture and ample canopy so most varieties came through summer unaffected. For the remainder of the growing season the climate was ideal for premium grape production with many local growers proclaiming 2010 a stand-out vintage in McLaren Vale.
Variety: Cabernet (60%), Merlot (40%).
