cracka review

This is Geoff Hardy's top wine - a super rich, super intense red with huge inky flavour and lots of them. An icon level red for oak and sheer impact alone, needing a huge steak to match those flavours.

expert reviews

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Deep colour; a blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, revealing dark fruits of cassis, prune, black, olive and cedar; the palate is fleshy and still fresh, mid weight and light on its feet, slowly revealing abundant fine-grained tannins and a savoury conclusion.

Air drying shiraz and cabernet before fermentation concentrates the grapes to give very sweet fruit, sumptuous tannins, massive wines

Rich, hyper-concentrated spice, chocolate, licorice and black fruits combination; lingering tannins. Egyptian rather than Italian inspiration.

winemaker's notes

Story: One of the more intriguing wines created in biblical times was the ‘Tzimmukin’, using slightly dried grapes to increase strength and longevity. At K1 we have captured the essence of this ancient technique by slowly air drying our best parcels of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in baskets to produce a quintessential Australian blend.

Vintage: Above average winter rainfall set the vines up with healthy canopies. In December some rain helped brighten up the vines and from then on the grapes ripened perfectly. The wines emerging from 2010 red varieties were of particularly high standard.

Nose: This wine is dark and intense with aromas of black cherry, plum, eucalypt and black olives with savoury spice notes of cloves and cinnamon.

Palate: The palate is ripe, smooth and full-bodied with additional aromas of blackcurrant. The tannins are big, lush and balanced, followed by a lengthy finish.

Pairing: Be daring and try this wine with an exotic African kudu fillet with a creamy mushroom sauce.

Cellaring: Drink now to 2025.
