Geoff Merrill is a genius at making honest to goodness, deeply flavoured McLaren Value beauties that make you wish all Australian wines tasted this good. This classically rich Shiraz is intense, ripe and delicious, and a must have for fans of McLaren Vale region. McLaren Vale fared better than most in 2011, and this is a stunning result.
Winemakers Notes: The colour is a deep red with touches of youthful violet in the hue. The aroma is warm and inviting. Initially licorice, dark fruits and menthol come forward which opens up to reveal white pepper and dried herbs, fresh earth and savoury meats. The palate is well balanced from start to finish. It is finely textured and structured with fresh dark berry fruit, spice, coffee and chocolate and finishes on a savoury fruit note.
Vintage Information: The 2011 vintage was one many would probably like to forget. During the crucial time for grape growing in McLaren Vale (January to March), we experienced double the average rainfall (55.5mm) with falls for the three months totalling 116.4mm.
The lead up to the vintage was actually very good. Soaking rains in winter and into spring and mild temperatures in early summer meant a nice slow accumulation of flavours which we managed to capture in the majority of the fruit we took in.
