2011 Geoff Merrill Bush Vine Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre McLaren Vale Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This is a stunning blend for the price showing berry freshness, spice and an earthy, savoury aspect. Structured and long it’s got all the key factors we seek in a barbecue wine.

Winemaker's Notes

Winemaker's notes: The colour is a healthy garnet with good depth. The aroma is a subtle complex blend of mulberry, white pepper, earth and meaty notes. The judicious use of old, large oak has really brought the mature fruit forward in this very versatile blend. The palate is forward and full of fruit when it enters the mouth, then slowly the underlying depth and structure is revealed. The wine finishes on a fruity tannin note, perfect for rich sweet meat dishes.

Vintage information: The 2011 vintage was one many would probably like to forget. During the crucial time for grape growing in McLaren Vale (January to March), we experienced double the average rainfall (55.5mm) with falls for the three months totalling 116.4mm. The lead up to the vintage was actually very good. Soaking rains in winter and into spring and mild temperatures in early summer meant a nice slow accumulation of flavours which we managed to capture in the majority of the fruit we took in, with this being no exception.

Variety: Shiraz (55%) Grenache (37%) Mourvedre (8%)

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
A 57/35/8% blend, the components utterly synergistic; the result is a spicy, savoury elegance that bodes well for the long life ahead of a wine that has made light of its 4 years to date; the oak, tannin and alcohol management could not have been improved on, the fruit expression a delight.

Light colour; in the manner of Southern Rhone wines, the colour is no necessary guide, the warm, spicy red fruit flavours insidiously imposing themselves on an unexpectedly long finish.

Roughly 60%grenache, 30% shiraz and 10% mourvèdre, this has a satisfying richness with plenty of grenache's red fruits on the nose, really impressive; some darker fruits and earthy nuances too. The palate's a shade darker still, with more berry fruits and some gentle tannin clinging to the finish. Nice balance, complex and thoroughly delicious - a great-value red.

Excellent hue; has the authority, which McLaren Vale regularly gives good examples of this blend, and which the Barossa Valley does not; offers a bouquet of red fruits in a supple but focused palate

A delicious medium-bodied wine with affinities to the Southern Rhone; the tighter focus of McLaren Vale grenache contributing to the mouthfeel, but richer shiraz and the tannins of mourvedre also play their part.

Elegant medium-bodied wine; a full array of flavours including blackberry, raspberry and red cherries; fine tannins. McLaren Vale can do with ease what the Barossa finds difficult.

Very nice wine; excellent fusion of fruit, oak and tannins; juicy, pleasantly jammy, grenache coralled by spicy shiraz and firm mourvedre.
