Cracka Review

The brilliant Rick Kinzbrunner has worked his magic yet again. Although 2011 was a difficult year for some, the cooler year was ideal for this site and brought out the wonderful savoury, Hermitage-esque flavours the Giaconda Warner Vineyard Shiraz is famed for. Black cherry, smoked meats, soy and five spice. Not to mention length like a ballerina's pointe - muscular, supremely elegant and laser-like precision. Yet another reminder of why Giaconda have the reputation they do.

Winemaker's Notes

A complex nose of spice, pepper and undergrowth shows lifted red fruit characters as a result of the cooler vintage. A vibrant palate of sweet plums and cherries with an edge of roasted meats, earth and mushroom. The palate is elegant with a long finish and nicely balanced by fine grained silky tannins.

From a cool year comes this amazing wine. Amazing, peppery and vivid with ripe black fruits, and lovely chalky minerality. The palate is beautifully fresh and focused with lovely pure black cherry and raspberry fruit, as well as some fine, spicy, mineral grip. Amazing precision here.

An outstanding Beechworth Shiraz from the difficult 2011 vintage. Red berry, herb, peppercorn and cedar aromas haven't quite the usual richness, but the silky palate is intense and balanced by fine, soft tannins carrying a long, gentle finish.

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2011 Warner Vineyard Shiraz possesses an extraordinary nose of warm blackberries, mulberries and bacon with suggestions of Sichuan pepper, Chinese five spice, soy and cigar boxes. Medium-bodied and exquisitely elegant in the mouth, it has a great backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins and crisp acid cutting through the intense black fruit and spice flavors before finishing very long.

Lean, greenish but likely to evolve slowly towards a fine grained, restrained style reflective of the season. Its spicy, musky fragrance of red plums, cranberries, raspberries and dusty, cedary oak reveals scents of white pepper and dried herbs, clove and cinnamon, mint and forest floor. Fine and reserved, with a delicate forward presence of small red and black berries backed by a chalky spine, it finishes with good but not great length, with a slightly sappy and herbal edge.

Elegant and tightly focused, this dusty, faintly herbal shiraz has the length and structure to flesh out nicely. Its retrained smoky and floral bouquet of dark berries, cherries, plums and cedar/chocolate oak is lifted by a meaty presence of animal hide and ethereal, musky spices. Long and supple, with a retrained presence of vibrant, faintly sour-edged fruit, it finishes with a gentle extract, fresh acids and a lingering fruitfulness.

More black pepper here. Woodsmoke. Black cherry. Not a huge wine but it begs the word statuesque. Perfectly formed, supple tannin. If you wanted to know what Giaconda Shiraz is all about, this would be a great place to start. Cork-sealed likewise. Super Shiraz.

Deep garnet-purple in colour. The 2010 Warner Vineyard Shiraz presents a wonderfully fragrant and complex nose of warm blackberries, wild blueberries and black raspberries with hints of pepper, dried Provencal herbs, cloves, aniseed, char-grilled meat and loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is both elegantly constructed and intense, with loads of black and red fruit flavour layers and a pleasant earthy and herbal streak. It is all framed by medium to firm rounded tannins as well as crisp acid and finishes with great persistence.

Reflective of a warmer, riper season, this brooding shiraz is going to need plenty of time. Its peppery, spicy bouquet of deep red and black fruits, dark chocolate and gamey, cedary oak reveals hints of musk, blueberries and briar. Backed by powerful, fine-grained savoury oak, it's medium to full-bodied but densely packed with fruit and textural elements. Long and firm, still rather closed, it slowly reveals the extent of its length and depth, finishing meaty and savoury, but with a profound, lingering core of black and red fruits still tightly wound around its fine, grainy tannins.

Rick Kinzbrunner's property in Beechworth is home to some of the most exciting wines in Australia including terrific pinot noir, shiraz from a number of local sites and Australia's greatest chardonnay. Out of the three shiraz wines, the Warner Vineyard remains our favourite; it's compact, dark, inky and intense with smells of macerated plums, ground coffee, smoked meat, spice and earth. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of sweet-berried fruit, spice and delicious mineral texture. Drink it with a butterflied leg of lamb off the barbecue.

This is the more fragrant and showy of the pair of '08 shiraz wines from Giaconda. Showing rich, meaty complexity, it needs plenty of air to unfurl and open up. Cinnamon-dusted game meats, dark fruits and meaty oak all roll out. The palate has plenty of flesh, with neatly defined tannins, dense and memorable, tangy acid crunch and plenty of plum and cherry-pip flavour; graphite to close.

Powerful, meaty and savoury, this substantial, complex and deeply layered shiraz slowly unfolds its concentrated expression of blackberry, blueberry, dark plum and cassis like flavour beneath a spicy, musky perfume of cracked pepper, smoked meats and cinnamon. It steadily becomes more pungent, opulent and accessible, as its firm, chalky palate yields more fruit sweetness and depth with aeration. Exceptionally long and complete — it's a statement of sophisticated winemaking intent. And it needs time!

Stunning soil- and site-driven purity, graphite and dark minerals, some smoke, a little tar; this is a savoury and complex shiraz with intense dried dark plum - sanguine almost. A massively proportioned shiraz by the standards of this vineyard, and one whose meaty ripeness and treatment with bruising, charry oak simply demands time in the cellar. It opens with exaggerated slowness to reveal deep, brooding, briary and brambly fruit and smoky, charcuterie-iike undertones. Closed down to the point of lacking personality at present, it ultimately reveals deep, spicy, seamless qualities and a superb, long-term structure. Don't be misled by its raw smokiness if you open it too early — simply wait a day or three.

Heady, musky and exotically spiced, its ethereal and peppery perfume of blackberries, dark plums, cassis and mocha/dark chocolate oak has a meaty ripeness and an undercurrent of dried herbs. Full to medium in weight, its bright, briary flavours of sour-edged blackberries and dark plums reveal smoky, rustic and charcuterie-like nuances and spicy suggestions of licorice. The tannins are fine, drying and bony. Very seamless and balanced, It's complete, complex and savoury, with more than a suggestion of Hermitage.
