Expert Reviews

Rob Geddes MW (2010 Vintage) says
The 2010 shows a substantial deep ruby black centre giving a concentrated appearance.A lot of details in the nose with dried herbs on the edge of spearmint and sage, with smoked meats as well the familiar warm ripe black berry of shiraz. The palate is youthful, intense, substantial and latent, yet subtle rather than overt.Tannins are well ripened silky and the medium full body has great length with black berry and dried herb flavours and fruit sweetness and enough burly tannins to carry the fruit for a decade or more.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
An excellent, firm and robust shiraz of genuine depth and quality. Musky and meaty, its briary bouquet of blackberries, cassis, suede leather and dark chocolates is lifted by spicy, peppery aromas. It's long and layered, with a smooth and full-bodied presence of meaty dark berries and briar knit with cedary, walnut-like oak and wrapped around a firm, chalky spine of drying tannin. Finely balanced and finished with excellent acidity, it's set for the long term.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Steeped in an exotic, musky perfume of black pepper, five spice, violets and briar, with bright aromas of cassis and blackberries knit with creamy, lightly toasty vanilla oak. It's underpinned by a firm, drying astringency and opens up layers of deep, dark fruit and charcuterie-like complexity that extend long down the palate towards a finish of length, strength and balance. Back to top form for this label.

Classic Bendigo, classic Balgownie Estate; perfectly modulated blackberry, licorice and spice varietal fruit, French oak balanced and integrated; medium-bodied, with very good texture and structure.

Jeremy Oliver (2008 Vintage) says
Deeply ripened, with dark and slightly closed bouquet of faintly pastille-like dark berries, dark chocolate and hints of game meats backed by nuances of musk and spice. Polished and finely crafted, with a fine, dusty backbone, it's smooth and juicy, moderately long and finishes with lingering warm, spirity notes of dark chocolates, liqueur plums and just a hint of baked fruit.

Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says
A powerful, dark and astringent shiraz with a brooding, meaty fragrance of blackberries, dark plums and vanilla/dark chocolate oak backed by spicy suggestions of cloves and nutmeg, a hint of mint and menthol and a pungent whiff of cracked pepper. It's presently very closed, lacks much mid-palate sweetness and finishes quite hard and drying, with a chalky rawness. It needs plenty of time.

Dark-fruited, meaty and savoury, this firm, palate-staining shiraz delivers deep, minty layers of blackberry, cassis, dark plum and mineral elements tightly knit with excellent, fine-grained chocolate/vanilla oak and supported by drying, powdery tannins. It's long, complete and surprisingly stylish, finishing with lingering savoury, meaty and iodide-like influences. Despite the season's heat, a particular and regional Bendigo shiraz.

Firm, in classic Balgownie/Bendigo style; rich blackberry fruits, licorice, and splashes of red fruits and allied spices; fine tannins, long finish.

Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says
Firm and drying, this ripe, meaty and smoky shiraz delivers a ripe, slightly jammy expression of vibrant plum and blackberry fruit without the presence of overcooked characters. Laced with minty and herbal undertones, its briary fruit aromas are underpinned by nuances of smoked meats and mocha-like oak. Enlivened by refreshing acidity, its richly fruited palate finishes with suggestions of chocolate and vanilla.

Jeremy Oliver (2004 Vintage) says
A minty central Victorian shiraz whose intense aromas of cassis, dark plums, dark chocolate and cedar oak are backed by suggestions of menthol, white pepper, cloves and cinnamon. Its firm, somewhat bony palate is slightly dosed, but still delivers ripe dark fruit flavours and polished cedar/vanilla oak over nuances of dried herbs. Finishing tight and savoury, it lacks the depth and complexity of previous recent vintages, but delivers pleasing weight and structure.

Jeremy Oliver (2003 Vintage) says
A spicy, peppery and lightly minty shiraz of considerable meaty, earthy charm and fineness. Its penetrative, floral and musky aromas of blackcurrants and dark plums reveal reductive charcuterie-like undertones, while its palate is classically structured and elegant on one hand, firm and sinewy on the other. Its pure, deep berry flavours are entwined with fine, bony tannins and sweet creamy/vanilla oak, with an undercurrent of mint and menthol.

Jeremy Oliver (2002 Vintage) says
Excellent central Victorian shiraz with a sneezy black pepper aroma of blackberries and dark plums laced with cinnamon, cloves and tightly knit chocolate/vanilla oak. There's also an earthy and slighty funky meatiness present throughout its sumptuous and intensely flavoured palate of briary and spotlessly clean dark fruit flavours. Framed by velvet-smooth but firm tannins, it's an excellent wine of first-rate balance and integration.

Flooded with blackberry and plum fruit, though not the least heavy nor (obviously) alcoholic.

James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Dense, deep, impenetrable red-purple; a powerful, deep black cherry and black pepper bouquet is followed by a mouthfilling, round and lush palate, not extractive, and with good oak and good length. However, needs a decade to show its best. Does have a touch of Viognier.

James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet is quite complex, with lifted dark cherry fruit supported by cedar and spice. The powerful palate exudes dark cherry and plum fruit, with lingering, but ripe, tannins, and the oak well controlled. Shows the concentration of a low-yield vintage due to spring frost.

James Halliday (1998 Vintage) says
Very dense purple-red; the bouquet is clean, with concentrated blackberry fruit; a massive wine on the palate, with similarly concentrated fruit and oak, and the tannins needing time to soften. I am confident this will happen with sufficient time in bottle.

Medium to full red-purple; powerful and earthy dark chocolate and blackberry fruit aromas introduce a rich and substantial palate. The flavours run through dark chocolate, raspberry and blackberry with soft, chewy tannins and subtle oak on the finish.
