2012 Elderton Command Single Vineyard Shiraz

Expert Reviews

Wine Companion (2012 Vintage) says
From a vineyard planted in 1894, picked in five small parcels over 4 weeks; part fermented in open fermenters, part concluding its fermentation in new American and French puncheons. Command indeed; elegant, but brooking no argument, the X-factor of the fruit at once obvious, yet undefinable; certain it is that its balance and depth are beyond approach, the oak and tannins seamlessly stitched through the fruit and length of the palate.

Vineyard planted 1894, matured in French and American oak. The oak and the fruit have fast become inseparable. Rich blackberry, coal, earth and coffee-cream flavours cascade onto the palate and on out through the finish. Dry, filigreed tannin builds as the wine breathes; you only notice it once you're safe in its embrace. Both old school and new school at once; it's elegant and rich, unafraid of oak but blessed with pure, dark berried fruit.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
A very elegant and refined Shiraz that fully lives up to its reputation; fragrant red and black fruits have a garland of spicy oak on the bouquet, a message that is faithfully reproduced on the long, medium-bodied palate.

This truly excellent example of Barossa shiraz comes from vines planted in 1894 and from one of the great vintages of the region. Deeply complex, with dark fruits and a decent splash of well-weighted oak. Blackberry and licorice, spices and dark chocolate are all in this wonderful statement of the best in the Barossa, delivered with a degree of finesse and style.

Clear purple-crimson; a beautifully balanced wine that effortlessly walks around its alcohol, the mediumbodied palate with blackberry and plum fruit, and substantial built-in oak. History shows that Command takes a number of years to absorb that oak and come into full flower.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
A heady melange of dark fruits, licorice, anise and lavish levels of toasty oak; the palate is full of warm, ripe fruitcake character, with plenty of concentration; while certainly a 'more is more' style of wine, the detail is evident with its light touch and the finish is very long.

The bouquet delivers a complex array of red and black fruit, with smoky tar and licorice on display; the palate is an experience in two parts; on entry vibrant perfume, and to conclude there is a lingering sense of black fruit, fresh leather and smoky tar all working seamlessly together.

Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says
Richly flavoured, dark and alluring, this slightly exaggerated but finely presented regional style sits well amongst its genre. Deep, spicy aromas of blackberries, redcurrants, mulberries and cassis are handsomely cloaked by fine-grained charry mocha oak, with meaty, earthy undertones. It's sumptuous but surprisingly elegant, with a polished, almost salty palate of plush, juicy fruit and sweet, tight-knit oak, finishing with genuine length and concentration, but also with a touch of charm and balance.

Good viticulture has helped fashion a fine Command, whose densely layered aromas of plums, blackberries, cassis and mocha/chocolate oak are backed by meaty, cedary and vanilla undertones. Dripping with concentrated, confiture-like fruit, its long, sumptuous palate of profoundly ripened but not over ripened fruit shows all the customary Elderton extravagance with oak but is underpinned by a silky-smooth chassis of pliant tannin.

Good colour; quite a restrained and elegant bouquet, showing more red fruit than black, and a little fruitcake spice; the palate is fresh and vibrant with toasty oak seamlessly framing the fruit; a long and harmonious finish with chewy tannins and fresh acidity.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2006 Vintage) says
It's a big, brutish Barossan red and of course it's designed to perform well in the cellar, but we reckon you'd have no problems drinking this now too. Stand back and prepare for a blast, though. It has a mix of rich red and black fruits with strong cherry accents and the usual toasted mocha and coconut oak. It all meshes very well. It has a plentiful supply of fine, supple tannins and a long smooth finish - in short, it has the lot.

Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says
Handsomely ripened and given an extended maturation in small oak, this sumptuous and harmoniously balanced shiraz delivers smooth, luxuriant flavour with plenty of length and polish. Floral and spicy, its peppery bouquet of small black and red berries, dark plums and sweet vanilla oak reveals smoky undertones. Supported by very fine, firm tannins, its vibrant palate of intense fruit and coconut/cedar/dark chocolate oak finishes with a lingering mintiness and fruit.

Good colour; excellent focus, balance and length; blackberry fruit with lashings of dark chocolate and spice; ripe tannins, controlled oak.

James Halliday (1998 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; the deep and complex bouquet has an array of rich, dark berry, plum, chocolate and vanilla aromas; the rich palate has an unctuously sweet fruit, chocolate and vanilla mix; the overall extract is well handled - this is a very good example of the full-on American-oaked Shiraz style.
