2012 Reillys Dry Land Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Sourced from 40-year+ vines, this is another rich, full-bodied, musclebound red from Reilly's that has seen some generous oak. The nose is very concentrated with super-ripe smells of blackberries, cherries and dark plums, along with mocha and star anise spice. The palate is full-bodied (15.5% alcohol) and plush, with jammy plum and dark berry flavours, licks of fruitcake and mocha oak, surprisingly mellow tannins, and a spiced prune finish that gives the throat a warm cuddle on the way down. One for the big red lovers!

With low yielding pushing the boundaries of ripeness, these wines have huge alcohol and powerful fruit with liquorice, dates, prunes and berry fruits.

A slightly reduced wine on both bouquet and palate should benefit from vigorous decanting, for there are bright fruit flavours underneath.

Impressively concentrated and oaky, this powerful shiraz fits into the ultra-ripe spectrum of flavour without showing overcooked characters. Its meaty, tarry aromas of currants, plums and violets reveal earthy undertones and spicy, fine-grained nuances of sweet vanilla/coconut oak. Its sumptuous palate of vibrant small berry and plum like fruit is framed by fine, firm and tightly knit tannins, finishing with a vibrant length of minty fruit backed by exotic spices.

Abundant black fruit aromas and flavours, but not over the top in any way; notes of spice and attractive oak; ripe tannins.

Rather flat, dried out and tarry, this sumptuous and cooked shiraz has a deeply spiced and meaty aroma of chocolate and treacle-like cooked plums and raisins. It's impactful and framed by powerful but pliant tannins, but still finishes with a hint of bitterness.

Firm and structured shiraz, if perhaps a fraction raw. Its spicy aromas of violets, cassis and blackberries are matched to assertively creamy/coconut American oak, with undertones of chocolate and licorice. There's strength and richness, if not finesse, but the wine offers plenty of punchy fruit and oak.

Good red-purple; a very powerful, earthy bouquet, bordering on astringency, is followed by a full-on palate, crammed with chocolate, blackberry and tannins. Could develop into something special in the long term.
