2012 Rosemount McLaren Vale Collection Cabernet Sauvignon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

In the wine world, Decanter is a BIG DEAL. Posh Englishmen in top hats writing about even posher wines. And then along comes a little old red from McLaren Vale and knocks them all over, floors them.

This McLaren Vale red scored 95 Points and was awarded the year’s best Australian Cabernet over 15 pounds, and it beat some of Australia’s top reds to get there. There are wines that sell for thousands of dollars per bottle that don’t get 95 Points from Decanter Magazine and today we’ve got the ripper McLaren Vale Cabernet that beat them all.

But Decanter Magazine is not the only critic to get behind the 2012 Rosemount McLaren Vale Collection Cabernet Sauvignon. James Halliday chimed in with 94 points calling it “elegant and well balanced cabernet”. And with a couple of years in bottle this cracking wine has got even better.

Pure McLaren Vale from start to finish it is rich, ripe and delicious, and now lifted by just a touch of aged complexity.

Winemaker's Notes

A big bold and generous nose jam-packed with sweet mulberries, blueberries and all the hallmarks of a classic McLaren Vale Cabernet.

A vibrant and lifted palate revealing the classic hallmarks of a great McLaren Vale Cabernet: rich blueberries complemented by a mild spicy oak. Sourced from a diverse range of sub-districts with varying microclimates, this is a complex and well-balanced wine.

Good Winter rains and a warm spring led to early budburst and flowering during Spring. Harvest started early in the first week of February, but there were relatively mild to warm days over the ripening period with cool nights, allowing for great ripening conditions. The lower yields have produced wines of great concentration and poise.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Gold and trophy winner Decanter World Wine Awards '14 for Aus Bordeaux varietals over 15 pounds, and is indeed an elegant and well balanced cabernet, cassis and briar notes on both the bouquet and medium-bodied palate; tannins and a subtle hint of oak complete the picture.

Decanter Magazine (2012 Vintage) says
Generous with great fruit intensity and lifted aromas of cedar and jammy blackcurrant. Lovely texture, complexity and excellent tannins with obvious Cabernet fruit. A bruiser, this pushes the envelope but is beautifully made and still retains the signature freshness of McLaren Vale.
