Cracka Review

The kind of wines being made at Sutton Grange typify the pursuit of handcrafted styles that remain true to the region, yet embody a European sensibility. This Syrah (the French for Shiraz) is a classic example of taking the best quality fruit and styling a medium bodied red that is perfect with food. As well as fruit vibrancy this wine reveals a distinctly savoury and spicy edge. Texture and tannin lead the way on the palate providing a wine that is balanced with great length.

Winemaker's Notes

Blackberries and plum fruits, with notes of crushed white peppercorn, florals and sweet spices.

This wine represents the best expression of Syrah grown on the Sutton Grange farm from the 2012 vintage - an exceptional year in Central Victoria. The nose displays aromas of blackberries and plum fruits, with notes of crushed white peppercorn, florals and sweet spices.

The palate is lively and bright, with a layered structured and bold tannins, balanced by round, soft fruits in the mid palate.

The natural acidity and minerality that is a hallmark of Sutton Grange Syrah. Sourced from the best blocks to create an elegant and refreshing wine.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
This is where the word substantial gets serious. This is a powerhouse of black cherry, anise and black pepper flavour, the tannin screwed tight but the flavour poured on. There are floral notes too and a gamey note to close; the latter the key caveat, depending on your disposition. In most ways this is a gorgeous wine.

Campbell Mattinson (2012 Vintage) says
Fantastic volume of flavour. Indeed it smells and tastes beautiful. Cracks of black pepper, black cherry, anise and florals. Deep and profound. The only issue is the finish, which is exceptionally tannic, to the point where it goes beyond dry and into ‘drying’ territory. Beautiful but difficult to rate.
