2012 Tyrrell's HVD Single Vineyard Hunter Valley Semillon

What's the verdict?
"There's a wonderful approach into this - nothing is out of place. Sit back and enjoy the evenness of its palate, the acidity almost softish, the lemongrass and slivers of glace lime, the texture: just the yumminess of it. Great drinking. To 2032.
95 points - James Halliday's Wine Companion"

'Showing a little free sulphur. Lemon lime, stony, very tart and austere, crunchy acidity and searing length – all sucking pebbles and lemons at this stage. Some herbal flavours in there, but it’s a baby wine of considerable intensity. A dark horse' Gary Walsh.

What's the winemaker have to say?

Region: Hunter Valley, NSW. The wine is floral fruit in youth, which moves towards biscuity characters with age

Winery: The vines in the HVD vineyard were planted in 1908 and form the "Sign Post Block”. The vineyard lies between two small creeks that are fed from a spring in the Brokenback range. The vines are rarely stressed and their roots are almost continuously in water.

Vintage: Great soil moisture from the previous growing season meant that the vineyard saw it’s best season in years. Kind weather over Christmas ensured even ripening and flavour development in the bunches.

Winemaking:The grapes were hand picked then lightly crushed before a relatively cool fermentation in stainless steel. After a short period on gross lees, the wine was racked and left to mature in stainless steel for a further five months before bottling.

on the nose:Classic HVD Semillon showing lifted floral aromatics

on the palate:The palate is generally softer bodied with smoother acids than the Vat 1 and Belford Semillons. Tightly structured palate with considerable length and a great balance with it’s clean, soft acid structure.
