Cracka Review

The Wolf Blass Gold Label Adelaide Hills Syrah is a particularly ripe and spicy number that old Wolfie launched a little while back. Sourced from the warmer end of the Adelaide Hills, this is what the future of Aussie Shiraz tastes like - full of flavour, but with an extra degree of savouriness. Little wonder it has nabbed 11 gold medals hey!

Winemaker's Notes

An intensely fragrant wine redolent of bright red berries, ginger, exotic spices and cold meats. The palate is fleshy, with dark berry fruits and warm spices complexed with restrained French oak.

To create the Wolf Blass Gold Label collection, our winemakers select the definitive varieties of the very best South Australian wine regions to produce a range of progressive, elegant wines that showcase both regional and varietal excellence.

The elevation of our Adelaide Hills vineyards offers mild summer days with cool nights, providing ideal conditions for producing bright, spicy Syrah. Fermentation on skins for 7 to 10 days allowed for optimum release of colour and flavour while extracting fine, elegant tannins.

Grape Variety: Shiraz 98.5%, Viognier 1.5%.

Vintage Conditions: Below average rainfall and warm weather conditions reduced yields and brought on an early, condensed harvest. The cool Adelaide Hills region escaped the worst of the heat and this, coupled with availability of water from good winter rains, allowed fruit to ripen with optimum flavour and good natural acidity.

Maturation: 14 months maturation in seasoned and new French oak.

Colour: Vibrant crimson with purple hues.

Nose: An intensely fragrant wine showing lifted red berry fruits, spice, cold meats and subtle nutty complexity. A touch of Viognier adds an ethereal lift without dominating, enhancing the nose with exotic ginger and floral aromatics.

Palate: Fleshy, dark berry fruits and warm spice fill the palate, supported by a barely perceptible touch of oak. The Viognier contributes to an evenly textured, silky mouthfeel with fine velvety tannins and a tight acid backbone.

Peak Drinking: Enjoy now or cellar carefully over the next three to five years.

Food Match: Great with glazed spiced ham, Chinese barbecued pork buns or crispy-skinned roast duck with star anise and pickled plums.

Alc/vol: 14.5%

Winner of 11 Gold Medals and 9 Silver Medals.

2012 Wolf Blass Gold Label Adelaide Hills Syrah

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Excellent colour; the fragrant, spicy, red berry bouquet is followed by red and black fruits on the medium-bodied palate, the contribution from French and American oak suitably controlled for a wine of this weight; good length and balance.

James Suckling (2012 Vintage) says
This shows cooler climate pepper and spice on the nose with black cherry and dark plum fruit aromas and flavours. The palate is smooth, supple and glossy, tannins shimmer and the balance is right. Finishes with dark plum stone tang.
