Cracka Review

The 2012 Wolf Blass Gold Label Langhorne Creek Malbec is a chunky, hedonistic red that has a formidable show record. How does 7 gold medals and a trophy sound? Oh yes, it's a ripper - an inky red with oversized fruit concentration.

Winemaker's Notes

A bright, fresh, medium to full-bodied wine with complex layers of wild cherry, plum, lifted herbal notes and warm nutmeg spices. Fleshy and well-structured, this delicious spicy mouthful of fruit lingers on the palate with a soft, tight finish.

To create the Wolf Blass Gold Label collection, our winemakers select the definitive varieties of the very best South Australian wine regions to produce a range of progressive, elegant wines that showcase both regional and varietal excellence.

Langhorne Creek is perfectly suited to growing delicious, spicy, intensely flavoured Malbec. Renowned for its deep, rich alluvial soils, the region produces fine, soft wines of great richness and enormous depth of character. Fermentation on skins for 7 to 10 days allowed for optimum release of colour and flavour while extracting fine, elegant tannins.

Vintage Conditions: The combination of good winter rainfalls, low crop levels and mild conditions during ripening has resulted in exceptional quality. Bright, varietal fruit characters, great intensity of colour and flavour and excellent natural acidity are the hallmarks of 2012, which will go down as one of the great vintages of the decade.

Maturation: 18 months maturation in seasoned and new French oak has enhanced structure and complexity.

Colour: Vibrant purple.

Nose: Complex layers of wild cherry and plum interspersed with lifted regional herbal notes, warm nutmeg spices and fragrant oak.

Palate: A bright, fresh, medium to full-bodied wine with fleshy, concentrated fruit flavours of plums and dark fruits. Well structured, with textural, chewy tannins and gentle oak influence, this delicious, spicy mouthful of fruit lingers on the palate with a soft, tightly structured finish.

Peak Drinking: Enjoy the fresh fruit flavours in its youth or cellar carefully in the short to medium term for developed complexity.

Food Match: Great served with linguine with wild mushrooms and Italian sausage; or pork and veal terrine with mustard fruits.

Alc/vol: 14.5%

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Saturated with plum and prune, silently coating the mouth with its fruit that keeps oak for company, but not so much tannin.
