2013 Carlei Green Vineyards Shiraz

Cracka Value Rating

Cracka Review

This is a slightly more grunty style of Shiraz coming out of Heathcote. There's an abundance of ripe blackberries, fleshy plums, mocha and pepper spice on the nose, whilst the palate is full-blooded and musclebound, with rich, lush dark fruit flavours, a solid line of tannins, and a sweetly-fruited, toasty, decadent finish. Red roast meats are calling this wine.

Winemaker's Notes

This elegant Shiraz exhibits aromas of intense, ripe red and black fruits, avoiding over-ripe elements. Hints of black pepper spice and savoury notes lead to a palate that complements the aromas. The palate is rich and round with intense chewy fruit that is framed by soft yet persistent fine tannins.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
The colour is good, although not as dense as that of the super-cuvees; Carlei’s wisdom aspires to make ‘Shiraz unadorned by the usual garb from a winemaker’s wardrobe’. It seems to me he needs to think again about the amount of oak in these wines. Here, too, it muffles the fruit expression.
