2013 Castro's Ligador Shiraz Mataro

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

A ligador is a master cigar blender, but there's not much in the way of cigar characters in the wine, so maybe winemaker Ben Riggs is a fan of the art. However, this fuller-bodied red blend is packed with rich, ripe dark berries and star anise spice, with just a lick of chocolate and pepper. The palate is plush and juciy, with spiced berry flavours, friendly tannins and a decent finish. Great with BBQ beef short ribs.

Winemaker's Notes

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a very dark red hue. Lifted ripe dark plum and liquorice scents dominate the nose over some subtle dark chocolate, smoky vanillin cedar and spice. Ripe and juicy, the palate dishes up a rich flavour profile of black cherries, liquorice and dark plum over a back drop of smoky vanillin cedar and spicy earth characters. Dryish finish with firmish but relatively finely grained tannins. Aftertaste of black cherries, liquorice, smoky vanillin cedar and spicy earth.

Cellar potential: 4 - 5 years

Alc/vol: 14.5%

Wine Companion (2013 Vintage) says
This is absolutely packed to the gills with sultry black fruits on the mid-palate, opening up on the finish, where bitter chocolate, savoury/earthy/woodsy notes dance a fandango. Surprise packet.
