2013 Geoff Merrill Wickham Park Chardonnay

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

There are some names in winemaking that have a cult status, Geoff Merrill is one such figure, made famous by his impressive moustache and stellar talent with grapes. He’s a bit of a legend in the McLaren Vale region where he has won nearly every award possible for his vinous efforts. This Chardonnay is a rich combination of citrus and melon fruit that is balanced by crisp acidity and a long finish. Perfect when chilled and served with a chicken salad.

Winemaker's Notes

The colour is a pale straw with youthful green hues. The aroma is fresh and vibrant displaying citrus, light nectarine and some melon with subtle toasted oak. The palate shows fresh clean fruits with a creaminess courtesy of the small proportion of French oak fermented Chardonnay in the blend. Overall the wine has plenty of diverse flavour with well balanced acid, smooth mouthfeel and oak complexity which will complement many food styles.

The 2013 vintage was a welcome return to a fairly ‘normal’ vintage after the extremely low yields of 2012 and record wet of 2011. We had good winter and spring rains and only a small reduction in yield across a few varieties. The ripening period had a small heat ‘hiccup’ but the vines made it through unscathed and ripening continued extremely well enabling us to pick at full flavour ripeness.
