2013 Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge

Expert Reviews

Wine Advocate (2013 Vintage) says
The 2013 Côtes du Rhône, which is scheduled to be bottled in November, is a bigger, richer wine than I remember and has tons of ripe Syrah characteristics. Black olives, smoked earth, pepper and plenty of dark fruit all emerge from this inky-coloured, straight-up impressive Côtes du Rhône.

As for the red wines, first and foremost is Guigal's Cotes du Rhone. I re-tasted the 2010 Cotes du Rhone, which is still in foudre. This cuvee is typically a blend of 50% Syrah and the rest Grenache and perhaps some Mourvedre. Guigal is known throughout the Rhone Valley for paying the highest price for generic Cotes du Rhone, and that in large part explains the quality of this wine year in and year out. It enjoys an extended upbringing in foudre and stainless steel tanks and is always a dense ruby/purple-colored wine with lots of blue and black fruits intermixed with notions of kirsch, licorice, lavender and spice. Supple and surprisingly intense, this delicious effort can age for 4-5 years.

Nick Stock (2005 Vintage) says
It's staggering that this wine is assembled from hundreds of growers and bottled in multiple lots, yet it is delivered with blindingly consistent character. Ripe dark berry fruits, red fruits, cherries and earthy nuances. The palate delivers grainy tannins amid ripe dark plum flavour. Sensational value and undeniable drinkability combined.

Ken Gargett (2003 Vintage) says
This has often been dubbed the world's best-value wine and in some vintages that is hard to dispute. 2003, the horrendously hot year in France when locals literally dropped like flies, is one of them. The Guigal family source fruit from an astonishing 400 growers for this wine. Intense, spicy, powerful and seriously good, especially at this price. And if you were wondering: 55% syrah, 35% grenache, the rest mourvedre. (Yes, 10%. Well done.)
