Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Wow wow wow! We love Pinot here at Cracka, especially when it's of this calibre! 'Handpicked' from 4 seperate cracking Pinot Noir vineyards in Tassie, this is a deep, dark, dense and brooding expression of what is arguably Cracka's favourite varietal. If you like (or in our case - love) Pinot, grab a case - you will not be disappointed!

Winemaker's Notes

The Region: The pristine environment and relative isolation of Tasmania protect the island from biosecurity threats and guard its status as a genuinely clean and unspoiled region. These billy button flowers represent the natural beauty of the island and their bright colour symbolises the exuberance of this delightfully lifted and aromatic wine. A true cool-climate wine region, Tasmania has established a reputation for production of ultra-premium Pinot Noir and sparkling wines. Mild spring and summer temperatures followed by warm autumn days and cool nights produce a long season in which grapes ripen slowly, encouraging maximum flavour development. Maritime winds from all directions help moderate conditions year round.

The Wine: This is a juicy wine that shows primary fruit flavours of raspberry, cherry and strawberry. The fruit concentration is balanced by fleshy, chalky, long tannins. A combination of fruit from three vineyards in the Tamar Valley and one in the Pipers River area, it is a true expression of Tasmanian Pinot Noir.

Technical Info: Lower-than-average rainfall and a warm summer led to good yields with excellent flavour. The fruit for this wine came from four vineyards and parcels were selected and blended based on aromatics and balance. All grapes were hand harvested and then hand plunged in small open fermenters. The wine was matured in French oak, 33% new, for 11 months.

Expert Reviews

Campbell Mattinson (2016 Vintage) says
Well-powered pinot noir with good flesh. Quite a pretty wine for all its might. Provencal herbs, lavender, gum leaves, dark cherries, rolls of tannin, an attractive sting of acidity. Gets the job done through the finish. Needs time to build character, but an excellent wine, for now or for the cellar.

Wine Companion (2016 Vintage) says
From four vineyards, two on the east side of the Tamar, two on the opposite side, predominantly French clones 114, 115 and 777; made by Fran Austin at Delamere. Exceptionally rich and layered dark fruits/plum on the mid-palate, then a foresty/savoury finish and great length.
