Cracka Review

There's plenty of dark fruit smells and flavours, but also some delicate spice and florals in the mix. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a core of sweet and dark fruits, a decent lick of toasted cedar from the oak, fine-grained tannins and a dry, fruity, velvety finish. Great with some spicy lamb chops.

Winemaker's Notes

Handcrafting wines from our family vineyards in Padthaway, South Australia, Henry’s Drive Vignerons is named in admiration of the 19th century mail coach service that once drove through our property.

During the nineteenth century establishment of the farming and wine industries of south eastern South Australia, only horse drawn coaches provided the transit of mail and passengers. The coach drivers reigned supreme on top of their coaches and won the respect and admiration of their passengers.

The coach service proprietor in this part of the state was a certain Mr Henry John Hill. His operation drove directly through a property, owned more recently by three generations of the Longbottom family of Padthaway. Routes were known as Drives, thus the family’s wine business is today known as Henry’s Drive.

Aroma: Vanilla bean, cherry and licorice.

Palate: Mulberry, caramel and nutmeg.

Alc/vol: 14.5%

2013 Henry's Drive Padthaway Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2013 Vintage) says
25yo estate vines, open-fermented, hand-plunged twice daily for 5-7 days, fermentation completed in 60% French and 40% American oak (new and used) for 15-18 months, then a barrel selection. The style is consistent across the Henry's Drive wines, and it's clear the yield is being suppressed for these wines.

Wine Enthusiast (2013 Vintage) says
Full bodied, creamy in texture and lush on the palate, this wine offers a thrilling mouthful of satisfaction. Menthol, vanilla and cedar notes frame ripe, plummy fruit, while the velvety finish features lingering spice.
