Cracka Review

Leeuwin Estate needs no introduction. They are world famous for their "Art Series" Chardonnay, and this expressive Shiraz is an awesome, affordable red from these makers. Smells of dark berries, pepper spice, purple florals and a hint of smokiness lift from the glass, then the medium-bodied palate chimes in with sweet and spicy dark fruit flavours, suede-like tannins, and a good hit of earthy and pepper spices on the long finish. Excellent with a lamb ragu.

Winemaker's Notes

The Siblings label celebrates the family lineage of Leeuwin, with three generations of the founding family now leaving their footprints on the Estate.

The bouquet has incredible intensity befitting a great Shiraz year. There are concentrated mulberry, raspberry and potted plum fruits with coffee beans dipped in chocolate and lovely spice infused black pepper and liquorice to add further complexity. The palate has a wonderful textured feel, displaying juicy blueberries, mulberries, Asian spice and liquorice. The flavours are seamless across the whole of the palate showing a soft, round and approachable wine with fine tactile and mocha tasting tannins.

Variety: 93% Shiraz, 5% Malbec, 2% Viognier

Cellaring potential: 8-12 years

Alc/vol: 13.5%

2013 Leeuwin Estate Siblings Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2013 Vintage) says
85% machine-harvested, 15% hand-picked, the former destemmed, the latter whole bunch-fermented, matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new). A delicious combination of Cherry Ripe flavours plus spicy/bramble flavours. Does back off a little on the finish, but still a very good wine at the price.

Campbell Mattinson (2012 Vintage) says
Excellent release. Full of life and lift. Kirsch, cloves, pepper and dark cherry. Gets the flavours going early and maintains the show all the way through to a juicy, satisfying finish.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
A touch more purple in colour to the Art Series; interesting wine, with more black fruit characters and more depth, but not so much finesse perhaps; should develop well and is a bargain in the Leeuwin context.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Bright crimson-purple; lively and zesty red fruits run through the bouquet and medium-bodied palate; attractive touches of spice add to the appeal and length of the palate.

Ray Jordan (2007 Vintage) says
The impact of the Shiraz rejuvenation program starts to be seen in this lower priced end where the quality takes a big jump. Savoury and spicy aromas with a nutmeg and clove-like palate that is all soft and caressing. Lovely savoury flavours capture this variety beautifully.
Ray Jordan's 2011 WA Wine Guide 2011
James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
A clean cherry and loganberry fruit bouquet; a little spice, and quite dry and firm on the finish.
Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009
James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Good hue, although light; crisp, light-to medium-bodied palate that is lively but not deep; lunch/picnic style.
Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009
James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Very good colour; has considerable substance and texture; supple black fruits, excellent tannins and quality oak; long finish.
