2013 Sandalford Prendiville Reserve Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This is a stonkingly good shiraz from an outstanding vintage that is bound to kick on for a goodly number of years. Enticing aromas of red and dark fruits, toasted cedar and earthy spices waft out of the glass, whilst the palate is fuller-bodied and fleshy, with a warm, sweetly-fruited heart, lots of spice, fine-grained tannins, and a long, savoury finish. This calls for a juicy, medium-rare steak!

Winemaker's Notes

At optimal ripeness the fruit for this wine, as with all the Prendiville wines, was hand-picked and transferred to small bins for transport to the winery. After de-stemming and crushing, the Shiraz must was inoculated with a selected yeast strain and fermented in a small 10 tonne stainless steel static fermenter. The traditional method of “pumping over” was employed during fermentation twice per day to facilitate colour, flavour and tannin extraction. The wine finished fermentation in new Burgundian coopered (Louis Latour) French oak barriques. After the completion of MLF the wine was racked to stainless steel, ameliorated and then transferred back to the same French oak barriques. After 15 months of barrel maturation only the best 8 barriques were put aside for this release of the Prendiville Shiraz.

Colour: Dark Cherry red with magenta hues.
Nose: Very savoury in style. Think spicy – star anise, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves with mulberries and black cherry supporting.
Palate: An intense and complex wine, with the sweet berries from the nose up front, and savoury spices underneath. Given time in the glass, this wine opens up with a salami meatiness, cigar box cedar and mocha notes. The unmistakable flavour of vanillin from the French oak maturation comes through on the finish. A spicy wine, which will only improve with age. Cellaring potential of ten to fifteen years from the vintage date.

Alc/Vol: 14.5%

Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
Evenly ripened, this medium-term shiraz has a bright, spicy scent of red berries, blueberries and plums, well-integrated cedar/vanilla oak and a whiff of white pepper. It's supple and elegant, with a pleasing intesity of bright dark berry/plum flavour supported by a fine, drying spine of chalky tannins, finishing long and finely balanced.

Pure class. The nose shows those beautiful savoury minerally spices that sets the whole thing up perfectly. It's intense yet lightly perfumed. The palate is densely concentration yet displays a wonderful lightness of touch that perfectly expresses this variety from its Margaret River terroir. Combines the best of the previous two vintages. A glorious wine that will have even the harshest critic of Margaret River shiraz rethinking.

This is just so sublimely smooth and seamless on the palate you could be forgiven missing what power and fruit concentration is sitting behind it. One of the finest Margaret River shiraz I have tasted, Silky and velvety with a deep complexity. Anyone who had given up on Margaret River shiraz should check this out. A belter.
