Big red fans rise up - your hero wine is here!

This 2013 Serafino McLaren Vale Shiraz is a badass of a wine. It's thick, it's full, and it's heroically rich. Oh, and it's at the sharpest price in the land...

But let's step back a bit. You know why this red is so damn good? It all starts with beautiful ripe grapes. '13 in McLaren Vale was warm and dry, and you can almost taste the magical summer sun in this Shiraz.

The juiciness of those little black berries has helped this wine absolutely smash it on the show circuit, with a mighty solid 3 gold medals to its name.

That's just the start of the love too, as James Halliday also gave this 95 points and praised how the the 'structure and texture give precisely measured support to the strongly varietal expression'.

Campbell Mattinson was also a fan, calling this 'even-tempered Shiraz from McLaren Vale. Quality fruit. Clean as a whistle, lively, unencumbered. Free of spirit' and giving it 93 points.

Clearly everyone loves this Shiraz and for good reason - it's damn tasty.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2013 vintage was an extremely exciting vintage for the quality of fruit coming into the winery was outstanding. The increase in quality has been the result of meticulous vineyard management including shoot thinning in Spring and irrigation trails. The grapes were picked at optimum flavour and intensity. Once harvested the grapes were delivered to the Serafino winery where they pass through the crusher and destemmer. The parcels of grapes are then transferred to our five tonne open fermenters.

This is where we inoculate the grapes with yeast strains to deliver ideal fermentation. The fermentation process of converting sugars to alcohol takes around seven days. During this period each fermenter is carefully pumped over three times a day plus in the early stages we us a technique called delestage, where the juice is racked of the skins and then returned again to help with colour extraction, tannin enhancement and building the depth of flavour.

At the end of primary fermentation the wine was pressed off skins and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation. The wine is then racked to a combination of new and older French and American oak hogsheads (300L), for a further 12 months.

Deeply coloured; the bouquet is very complex, with black fruits, leather, earth, licorice and dark chocolate leading into a supple medium to full-bodied palate; here structure and texture give precisely measured support to the strongly varietal expression. The sense of place is also clear.

Toasty/smoky oak is a clear and important part of the wine’s shtick but sweet, plum-like fruit is more than up to the task. This cuts a pretty good groove; it’s a rich red but it’s not without elegance. Indeed spicier, more red-berried notes add lift and energy. It’s not at all heavy. It’s not even especially dark in the glass. And yet it doesn’t leave you wanting. Kudos.

Deep, youthful purple/red colour and a rich, chocolate-infused bouquet. The wine is full-bodied and fleshy, deep and dense, with full-bodied warm-climate style, and an abundance of tannin. Very rich, deep, luxurious wine, almost hedonistic. It will cellar long term.

Full, near-impenetrable black-red colour with a lighter edge and slight purple hues. The nose is fine and firmly concentrated with intensely packed aromas of ripe blackberries, black pepper, ink and spices with subtle earthy and fragrant ok notes. Medium-full bodied, the palate is well-concentrated with ripe flavours of blackberries, black pepper, plum and spice notes with liquorice, earth and ok detail. The fruit is supported by fine, grainy tannin structure, balancing the richness. The wine is carried by the texture and grip to a long, lingering finish of sweet black fruits, pepper and earth. This is a well-concentrated, ripe, black-fruited Shiraz with complexing pepper, spice and earthy interest on a well-structured palate. Match with slow-cooked game meats over the next 7-9+ years.

The bouquet and medium to full-bodied palate sing loud and clear from the same page, with blackberry and plum fruit skilfully enshrined in fine, ripe tannins, plus a nudge of oak. There is a harmony, a completeness, to the wine that means it is totally open-ended, its drinking window without borders.

Estate-grown. Blackberry, plum, spice and chocolate are all in play from the opening bell, and continue through the length of the particularly well balanced, medium-bodied palate; fine, but ripe, tannins tie a ribbon around the parcel, ensuring its longevity.
