2013 Skillogalee Basket Pressed Shiraz
There is a pronounced earthiness to this wine. Aromas of anise, spearmint and dark chocolate on the nose, segue into a myriad of flavours on the palate, including plum, coconut rough and sweet, warm spices, all solidly conveyed atop a smoky persistence. The palate is bold and fleshy, yet medium bodied.
The fruit was vinified in open fermenters, then gently basket pressed to create a wine with firm but integrated tannins, needing no fining. Maturation in a combination of French and American Oak Hogsheads has added considerably to the wine’s character, balance and complexity. The wine will cellar well for at least 10 years but, for those without that kind of patience, enjoy sooner with red or game meats, rich pasta dishes and fantastic company.
As with all our wines, this Shiraz is vegetarian and vegan friendly!

2013 Skillogalee Basket Pressed Shiraz
Just a little over and under-ripened, with an earthy, lightly minty and musky bouquet of cassis, redcurrants, blood plums and cedar/graphite oak overlying nuances of dried herbs and menthol plus a whiff of polished leather. Delivering plenty of concentrated, forward fruit, it loses intensity and richness down the palate, becoming rather lean, metallic and edgy. Backed by sweet cedary oak, it still finishes slightly sappy and greenish. Not for the long term. The Australian Wine Annual 2013 2012
Medium-bodied; smooth and supple blackberry and black cherry fruit; fine tannins, controlled oak and a long finish.Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007
Powerful, rich, concentrated blackberry, bitter chocolate and spice; good oak and tannins; no heat ex 14.5° alcohol.Australian Wine Companion 2006 2005
Slightly pruney and currant-like, lacking genuine tightness and focus, this still makes, rather a good fist of a hot year. Its rather cooked and stewed fruit and raspberry aromas are backed by mint and menthol with undertones of violets, iodide and herbaceous influences. Full to medium in weight, Its sumptuous and generously flavoured minty palate of dark fruit and cedar/vanilla oak dries out a little towards the finish.Australian Wine Annual 2007 2006
Still coming together, with fruit, oak and tannin in compartments; be patient.Australian Wine Companion 2006 2005
A flavoursome and lightly herbal shiraz that lacks genuine ripeness but offers generous fruit and some structure. Its bouquet is earthy and meaty, with minty undertones of menthol and dried herbs. Slightly lean, its palate opens up with pleasing richness of small berry flavours and restrained oak, but finishes with marginally raw and metallic, greenish edges.Australian Wine Annual 2006 2005
Moderately full shiraz whose up-front and minty aromas of concentrated blackberries, raspberries, cherries and plums reveal a light oaky smokiness. Beginning with vibrant, minty berry fruit, it loses some intensity and richness towards the finish.Australian Wine Annual 2005 2004
Complex spice, leather, black fruit and vanilla aromas; a juicy berry palate with pleasantly pronounced acidity.Australian Wine Companion 2005 2004
While the colour is on the light side, the hue is very good; minty, spicy, earthy, savoury aromas are followed by a medium-bodied palate offering a mix of red and black fruits with savoury/minty nuances; fine tannins to close.Australian Wine Companion 2004 2003
Excellent bright but deep red-purple; there is typically concentrated Clare fruit on the bouquet, quite plummy, and oak in support. An excellent young wine on the palate, fruit-driven and not extractive. The oak is subtle, the tannins well balanced.Australian Wine Companion 2001 2001
Medium to full red-purple; a ripe, sweet bouquet with powerful rm'nty berry fruit is followed by an extremely sweet and ripe palate with mint and black cherry fruit.Australian Wine Companion 1999 1998
