This is a good wine, the region and the picking decision delivering a maximum result for the winemaking team. The one question I have is the amount of oak, which is right up against the limit, taking the edge off the mouthfeel and the varietal expression of the fruit.Drink by 2028
Hilltops’ vineyards are placed amongst famous cherry and stone fruit orchards on the south-west slopes of the Great Dividing Range. The region offers ideal conditions for the production of powerfully flavoured, premium reds with finesse and complexity. The Hilltops region is part of the Murray-Darling Basin, centred around the towns of Young and Harden. While early vineyards were planted in the 1860s, the modern wine era began in the late 1980s. The inland region now lays claim to over 700ha of vine. It benefits from a continental climate of warm summers and cool, dry autumns. Diurnal temperature fluctuations coupled with typical elevations of 500 metres have a significant cooling effect. Soils consist primarily of deep red granite and gravelly clays rich in basalt.
Rich plum and complex spices on the nose. Enjoy the mouth filling velvet-like texture with dark cherry and ripe berry fruit characters. This wine finishes through elegant soft tannins and has well balanced acid.
