Cracka Review

Tyrrell’s cannot be accused of resting on their laurels, they may have over 150 years of know-how in the Hunter but they are also willing to bet on other regions to deliver premium quality wines. This Shiraz come from their McLaren Vale vineyards and is the essence of the region. It’s ripe with black fruits and chocolate and some subtle oak before a fleshy, intense palate that’s powerful yet balanced and elegantly structured. A full-bodied style that drinks well with mature cheeses.

Winemaker's Notes

A fine balance of power and finesse. Bright purple hue and lifted aromatics are accentuated by flavours of cherries, plums and chocolate. Fine, long tannins support the powerful fruit to give this wine its seamless palate structure.

Fruit-driven but sweetly oaked, this fresh, medium to full-bodied shiraz has a light, spicy and faintly meaty bouquet whose scents of raspberries, dark cherries, plums and cassis are tightly knit with creamy mocha/vanilla oak. Soft, juicy and approachable, its ripe berry/plum fruit and smooth oak are underpinned by fine, pliant tannins and wrapped in a gentle acidity.

It's a real crowd pleaser with a bit ot toasty warmth but no shortage of charm and flavour - or texture. Hale and hearty _ with plenty of sweet fruit. Great wine to go with steak and chips. Hits the spot and then some.

Sumptuous, ripe and approachable, with a sweet perfume of violets, dark plums and blackberries backed by fresh chocolate/vanilla oak and a sneezy whiff of pepper. It's smooth and polished, with delightful ripeness, brightness and length of dark, slightly meaty and mouthfilling fruit neatly underpinned by a pliant, fine-grained extract. Full to medium weight, it finishes with a lingering presence of fruit, oak and a sense of harmony.

There's often a clear quality difference between the two Rufus Stone reds, but this year they are two peas in the most beautiful pod. This is much like the Heathcote Rufus Stone except that it's darker and more chocolatey, its slippery-smooth skin of flavour overwhelmingly seductive from the get-go. It has a solid tannin structure buried in among the wealth of fruit and oak flavours, and a clear sense of persistence. Bugger the fancy talk: it tastes great and feels great in your mouth.

Watching the footy last night I heard a comment on the ump's mic after a collision between players: 'Make sure those knees are accidental.' How do you make sure of an accident? There have been a few accidents in the wine world. Our most famous vintage port, Stonyfell 1945, came about when a cellar hand fortified a tank of cabernet instead of the intended shiraz. The quality of this is definitely no accident. And top value.

Forward, ripe and vibrant, this flavoursome and slightly minty shiraz opens with a spicy aroma of meaty plums and currants backed by vanilla/dark chocolate oak and suggestions of menthol. Richly fruited, with a generous dollop of sweet chocolate/vanilla oak that enhances its marginally jammy palate, it lacks great length, but fits neatly with a fine-grained extract of tannin. Finishes a tad soupy, so drink it soon.

Five years ago I always grabbed the Heathcote version; now I prefer the McLaren Vale version. 2005 MCLAREN VALE Full of cuddly flavour, exactly as it should be. Opulent, settled and (thankfully) dark fruit flavours mix lusciously with milky, chocolaty oak. It's a wine good enough to eat. Minty, mentholy characters are a minor distraction and while it finishes warm, it's very satisfying.DRINK 2008-2012.
