Cracka Review

Vasse Felix are one of the most reliable wineries in the country, and this excellent cab sav shows why. It's typically cab sav on the nose with its smells of blackcurrants, tobacco, dried herbs and Margaret River choc-mint on the nose, whilst the palate is more medium-bodied with plush black and red berry flavours, fine, taut tannins, poised acidity, and a dry, fruity, slightly toasty finish. It will benefit from a couple of years in the cellar, but with plenty of air it will be good to go with rare roast beef.

Winemaker's Notes

This wine expresses the distinct regional profile of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and the site characters it takes from the Vasse Felix vineyards, with a focus on Wilyabrup. It was the first red wine produced in Margaret River and has been made every year since 1972. Cabernet is a robust variety ideally suited to Margaret River's climate and deep, well drained soils.

Appearance: Medium deep ruby red

Nose: Restrained but deep, complex perfumes of blue-black small berry fruit, floral potpourri, river stone, orange pith, dry jarrah twigs and hints of venison, dried mushroom and choc-mocha

Palate: A smooth plush entry leads into juicy mouth-watering acidity and following is a blanket of fine powdery cuddly tannin, drying but not overpowering. Flavours reminiscent of blackcurrant, nori and toasty cedar remain. A ripe, soft tannin vintage with savoury expression

Cellaring: Drinks beautifully now, will reward over 10+ years

Alc/vol: 14.5%

James Halliday (2013 Vintage) says
Interesting, very interesting. The colour, the freshness of the aromas and flavours, the finely sculpted tannins and the overall harmony suggest 13.5% alcohol, not 14.5%. All this conjecture is, of course, irrelevant: it is the outcome that matters here - a distillation of elegance.

Finely balanced, this long-term cabernet has a sweet, cedary perfume of deeply aromatic dark berries and cherries, blue flowers and spicy cedar/chocolate/vanilla oak. It's long, measured and elegant, seamlessly integrating its pristine fruit with faintly smoky, cedary oak and firmish al dente tannins before finishing long, supple and tightly focused, with a lingering savoury note of dark olive.

Such are the line, persistence, refreshing acidity, confident structure, graphite-fine tannins, lifted violet petals and deep-set blackcurrants on parade here that Vasse Felix sets a standard in benchmark, age-worthy cabernet.

Chasing a plush, juicy cabernet to crack with Sunday afternoon sangers? Well, forget this. The engineering is so impeccable it would put an Airbus to shame (hang on, make that a Boeing), and its serviceable life is longer, too! Stonking Margaret River cab from a legendary vintage.

There's a remarkable purity about this wine from the first sniff through to the last hint of the finish. It's pure cabernet essence integrated with a delightful cedary oak. Balanced and poised and displaying class and sophistication. Love the perfumed notes on the nose while the palate delivers with effortless ease to a long finish.

Thoroughly beautiful example of Margaret River Cabernet, this. From the seductive perfumed bouquet to the poised and deliciously succulent palate it's all Cabernet class. Love the mix of mint and blackcurrant with the cedary oak and fine powdery tannins. One of the best yet in this distinguished line.

Medium to full-bodied; rich, complex dark fruits with balanced tannins; austere but very stylish; great length.
