Cracka Review

Named after a 3/4-tonne bell that sits above the Wirra Wirra cellar door, the Angelus has been one of Australia's great wines for many years. It's a full-bodied, sumptuous wine that shows intoxicating aromas of black and redcurrant, flaked tobacco, cedar and anise spice on the nose. The palate is elegant and sweetly-fruited, with plummy, blackcurrant and chocolate flavours, firm but balanced tannins, taut acidity, and a long, lingering, cedary finish. Beef dishes are the go with this puppy!

Winemaker's Notes

The ¾ tonne Angelus bell that sits proudly atop our cellars is rung to announce the start and finish of each vintage in McLaren Vale and for other suitable celebrations. For generations it rung out thrice daily from the Jesuit Church at Norwood at, 6am, midday and 6pm, calling the faithful to joyful prayer. In honour of that tradition, the name ‘The Angelus’ is reserved for only exceptional parcels of cabernet sauvignon which are selected and vinified at Wirra Wirra.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2013 Vintage) says
From the four coolest districts of McLaren Vale; matured for 18 months in French barriques (20% new), usual rack and returns. Vivid hue; this is a beautifully weighted and structured, medium-bodied cabernet, showing how much synergy can be generated between place and variety; pure cassis fruit has the finest line of tannin support imaginable, line and length perfect.
