As well as significant regional complexity, there is the Bordeaux mix of varieties adding yet more. The great crimson-purple colour telegraphs a steel hand in a velvet glove. The wine has great structure and texture, yet is so refined it is only medium-bodied, with all the expected cassis, blackcurrant and mulberry fruit. Bargain, of course.

Proportion. Mouthfeel. Enough flavour without getting carried away. Such traits define this wine. There’s not a lot of heft here but there’s enough to satisfy. There’s blackcurrant and gum leaf, mulberry and earth flavour, creamy oak adding a polished sheen. The tannin profile here is about as ultra fine-grained as you’ll ever encounter. There’s a flush of refreshing acidity too. In all, really, $24 isn’t much to ask for this kind of quality, and drinking enjoyment.

Deepish red colour with a purple tint. The bouquet is ripe and clean, with raspberry and blackberry fruit and a tinge of violets. The wine is medium to full-bodied in the mouth, with ample soft tannins and no green or bitter bum notes. Good structure and backbone. Lovely wine.

I am seeing some truly exceptional wines from the 2014 vintage down at the Margs and this value-for-money wine captures a lot of quality of that vintage. A medium-bodied Cabernet with a fine angular mouth feel. The grainy and slightly chalky tannins work neatly with fine-grained oak. Black olive and leafy blackcurrant fruit with a hint of dark chocolate edginess. Make sure you either decant or let it breathe to bring out the best. Classy value for money Cabernet.

90% cabernet sauvignon, the balance equal portions of cabernet franc and petit verdot. Blackcurrant is the prominent varietal marker on bouquet and palate, the more lifted and floral notes contributed (most likely) by the minor partners. A touch of green herb and toasty oak along with the modulating tannin completes an attractive package.

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
cludes 4% each of malbec and petit verdot, and 2% cabernet franc; crushed and destemmed, fermented 5-7 days, a significant amount of post-fermentation maceration, 14 months in French barriques (20% new). Brightly hued, it has lively cassis fruit married to almost spicy tannins and sympathetic oak.
