2014 A. Retief Sauvignon Blanc

Winemaker's Notes

Made in the traditional ‘Bordeaux style’, fermented in French oak barriques with 16 months on yeast lees, the wine has an extra level of structure and complexity.

The wine has a nose of stone fruit, guava and melon, with an almost toffee edge. The palate is lightly textured, beautifully complex and full with the natural fruit acids leading to a long fresh finish.

A 65%/35% blend fermented in, and matured on lees for nine months in, French oak barriques Ñ the full white Bordeaux treatment. Has succeeded brilliantly, the fore-palate with generous stone fruit flavours, the finish fresh and incisive. This is, quite simply, a triumph of winemaking.

Given the full White Bordeaux treatment, barrel fermentation and then nine months in barrel with lees stirring (battonage); has worked very well indeed, the fruit quality high, the oak (surely) not new; rangy citrus flavours with just a hint of toast make an impressive wine.
