Cracka Review

This knockout Cab Sauv from Cape Mentelle is a ripper! Truck-loads of cassis, choc-mint, dried tobacco leaf and soft spice decorate the nose, whilst the palate is fuller-bodied and tight as a drum, with a decent core of dark and red fruits, fine and taut tannins, and a long, lingering finish that just doesn't quit! This will cellar for a decade easily.

Winemaker's Notes

Tasting note

Appearance: Deep garnet.

Nose: Although the generosity of the nose will increase with age, this young cabernet already displays abundant red fruit jam notes, supported by blond caramel, sweet liquorice and cocoa nibs that let through hints of varietal dried herbs and fresh forest floor.

Palate: The attack is delicate and focused but the palate packs a lot of muscle for its age. Retaining some typical dry bay leaf and tobacco notes, the wine displays serious black and red cherry fruit, jammed and caramelized, complemented by focused tannins upfront that generously unravel into warm supple cocoa beans and mocha notes. The noble oak supports the structure all the way to the long liquoricy finish that invites a second sip.

Food pairing: The Cape Mentelle winemakers suggest entrecote bordelaise, peppercorn-crusted flank steak and, for the more adventurous, some roasted quails with quince and wild mushrooms.

Cellaring: Can easily be enjoyed young, will reward cellaring 20+ years.

Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot.

Winemaking: After destemming, individual berry sorting and light crushing, individual vineyard batches were fermented on skins for up to 30 days. At the desired balance of fruit and tannin extraction, each batch was gently basket pressed, with harder pressings kept aside. The individual parcels were racked to oak following pressing for malolactic fermentation. The wines were matured for 18 to 20 months (depending on batches) in selected coopered barriques of which about 70% were new.

Analysis: 14.0% alcohol, 5.7 g/l acidity, 3.67 pH.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
Includes 15% merlot. Another excellent wine with neatly compact flavours and definition. Beautiful tannin structure, the palate silky and refined, the cassis, the oak, the spices all dutifully playing their part.

I enjoy looking through wine show results every now and then. It’s good value. This got exactly no medal in the 2016 Margaret River wine show. So, 87 points or lower on the TWF scale. Not quite sure what was wrong with it, as no notes are published to support the score. Anyway, I think it’s a pretty good wine. Boysenberry, raspberry and raisin, chocolate hazelnut, mint, tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, nutty churn of dark chocolate tannin, tobacco and pencil, smooth yet assertive, powering through the finish with a savoury tobacco-laced aftertaste. Strong release. Tannin is a high point. Yes.

Huon Hooke (2014 Vintage) says
Deep, dark red colour with a good tint of purple, the bouquet likewise deep and mysterious, with traces of coffee grounds, tinged with quality oak: a serious wine all-round. It's full-bodied and very concentrated, profoundly flavoured and structured, with masses of tannin and a terrifically long finish. A powerfully built cabernet of outstanding potential. A great wine, and possibly the best yet from Cape Mentelle.

James Suckling (2014 Vintage) says
Blackberry and blueberry aromas with wet earth and bark. Sandalwood undertones. Full body, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Very agile at the same time. Energy. What a wine for the cellar. Screw cap. Try in 2020.
