2014 Castillo Labastida Rioja Madurado D.O.

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This tasty treat from Rioja is exceptional value for what you get in the bottle, and would be perfect with BBQ meats. Made from tempranillo, it's a fuller-bodied, lightly-oaked style that shows dark cherries and berries on the nose, along with sniffs of star anise spice and earthy savouriness. The palate is quite fruity, with fleshy cherries, cedar and soft spice in the flavours, a bit of firmness to the tannins, bright acidity, and a decent spicy finish. Cellar for a couple more years, or give it some air and enjoy tonight.

Winemaker's Notes

This is a new addition for the Castillo Labastida winery, which is situated in the higher elevations of the Rioja Alavesa subzone. Unlike other entry-level Riojas, this 100% estate Tempranillo wine undergoes a brief period of aging in French oak—just enough time to add a hint of vanilla and sweet spice to the final wine—Madurado is a definite crowd pleaser!

Vibrant ruby-red in color, this wine shows rich aromas of black cherry fruit, plums, tobacco and a hint of licorice. On the palate, the fresh fruit flavors are backed by refreshing acidity, with finely integrated tannins and a peppery finish. Pair this with balsamic-grilled asparagus, roasted game such as rabbit or venison, veal cacciatore, or bacon-wrapped filet mignon.
