Cracka Review

There is nothing bittersweet about this wine from the Clare Valley. It's a medium to full-bodied, generously oaked wine that shows dark berries, minty and dried mixed herbs on the nose with liberal licks of dark chocolate. The palate is bright and spicy with talcy tannins, balanced acidity, and a spicy, slightly grippy finish. It will benefit from another couple of years, but it's good to go now with some braised lamb shanks.

Winemaker's Notes

Cabernet in the Clare Valley is distinct and powerful. It is one of the stronger varieties suited to the growing conditions and terroir of the region. The use of Malbec has a generous and appealing impact on the sometimes edgy and potent characters of Cabernet. They work hand in hand to give balance and richness to the drinker. Still distinctly Cabernet with violets, leafy notes and red fruits, this wine is a approachable and a delight to any Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec fan.

Colour: Bright, dark red.

Bouquet: A swirl in the glass and you are instantly greeted with violets, red fruits of raspberry and cherry with a hint of cedar and leaf. The Malbec works to lift the aromas and give a subtle show of fig.

Palate: Primary fruits, like having a mouthful of blueberries, are dominant and with the careful selection of oak, and enhanced with hint of leather and cedar. Round and elegant tannins are showing from the inclusion of Malbec which works to give this year’s Cabernet a more plush and generous palate.

Serve: Surprisingly Cabernet also works well with a meaty fish such as cod however lamb and steak are the natural choices. Among my favourite recipes are olive crusted lamb racks with roasted baby Spring vegetables and simple lamb cutlets with potatoes and crushed peas.

Grape variety: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec

Alc/vol: 14.3%

James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
The classic Clare blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec works extremely well, and this is a fine example. Malbec tends to soften and fill out the mid-palate and temper the firm Clare Cabernet tannins.
