    Another Pink Floyd inspired wine and another seriously dense one at that, again embodying the style of Clare Shiraz that hooks so many people in. By that we mean that it is minty and firm and barreling along with sweet oak but rather savoury fruit underneath it. The net result is big but yet with a certain sort of liveliness that is really very appealing. A big wine, yet not a fat one, this is very smart Clare Shiraz.

    Well, for the extra four or five dollars, it's well worth crossing to the Dark Side from the cheaper Wild Side shiraz made by Claymore. This has a dense dark colour and a solid serve of ripe plum, spice, leather and eucalypt on the nose; the palate carries the generous alcohol with plenty of ripe blood-plum flavour and rustic tannins, but it's best drunk young.

    Plenty of dark fruit here, and an earthy, spiced plum aroma. The oak has buried itself in nicely and this is already looking approachable. The palate's carrying good density and depth, with plenty of richness and chew and an assertive finish that would benefit from time in the cellar, a good decanting, hearty food or all of the above.

    winemaker's notes

    Colour: Bright, deep purple.

    Bouquet: Instantly you are greeted with juicy plum, forest floor, bramble and violets. Air contact releases more complex aromatics of savoury black olive and liquorice.

    Palate: Elegance, balance and complexity are all attributes linked to the Clare Valley. This 2014 release is no exception with brooding blue fruits and subtle velvety oak tannins giving the wine length and presence. Savoury mocha and ripe blackberry fruits create more layering and complexity. This is a wine that will be hard to put down.

    General: Each component used in the blending of the Dark Side of the Moon creates a Shiraz that exemplifies certain characteristics of the Clare Valley. From Leasingham to just north of the Clare Valley township, we had access to parcels that defined the subregions of Clare and work harmoniously to create a full, rich and balanced Shiraz. Combined with careful oak selection with 30% New French Oak and 70% older barrels, this Shiraz will continue to give for the next 8-10 years.

    Serve: Food matching with this wine is simple, bold flavoured foods. Try with an aged Scotch fillet steak topped with garlic butter on a bed of ratatouille. Simply matched with some creamy cheese and crackers will work well too.
