2014 Curly Flat Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
A fresh, lively and bright chardonnay from the cool Macedon Ranges; plenty of oak strapping it in place, some melon and citrus, lemon rind and cashew. The palate flows nice and even, acid is crisp, oak reinforces here too, decent length and a mix of dry lemon, pineapple, oak spice and fresh cashews to close.

Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine (2010 Vintage) says
This has a forward bouquet of toasted nuts, plus some chicken stock and matchstick characters. There's a touch of hardness in the mouth with complex, non-grapy flavours. A hint of hazelnut paste. There's no lack of character.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Mid gold-green hue; the bouquet offers a ripe array of nectarine, grapefruit, lemon blossom and struck quartz; the palate reveals a healthy touch of toasty oak that is in balance with the generous fruit and nervy spine of acidity; the length and complexity are both commendable and harmonious.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
A spicy, generous, if slightly angular chardonnay whose creamy, nutty aromas of white peach, apple, grapefruit and melon are backed by an assertive presence of vanilla/smoked bacon oak and suggestions of clove and cinnamon. It's viscous, almost cloying depth of ripe fruit and faintly raw, splintery oak should settle down with more integration, but the finish lacks the tightness and focus for a higher rating.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Straw-green; has more generosity than usual for Curly Flat at the time of its release, which is no bad thing, simply a fact. White peach, fig and cashew are all very evident, and so is the touch of citrus (linked to acidity) on the finish.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
An excellent, generous chardonnay in a fuller Burgundian mould that retains shape and elegance. Scented with spicy aromas of cumquat, quince, melon and grapefruit underpinned by nutty, spicy suggestions of ginger, cinnamon and creamy, leesy notes. It's long, supple and waxy, with a piercing, but restrained core of stonefruit, melon and citrusy flavour backed by mealy, savoury complexity, finishing with softness and a faint sappiness.

Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says
The heights of Macedon infuse chardonnay with taut, fine, linear acidity, while building definition and concentration of grapefruit, white peach, wild honey and fig. It will pull together magnificently as it matures.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Bright, gleaming quartz-green; a super-elegant wine that reflects its terroir in much the same way as riesling does, even though there are more winemaking inputs; grapefruit, apple, nectarine and mineral notes are the leaders, oak a vehicle and no more. Immaculately crafted.

Delicious and fleshy, rich but not heavy, seamless, layered and silky flavour and texture.

A concentrated and powerful Curly Flat that does not lose sight of the cool-edged restraint of Macedon. Complete and moreish, it's ready to roll.

A masterpiece of subtlety with pure lemony fruit & lovely delicacy. White almond meal complexity, crème caramel & baby powder softness.

Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says
Very restrained, smooth and supple, this evolving chardonnay marries rather shy peach, nectarine and grapefruit flavours with a complex meaty background of wheatmeal, lanolin and sweet vanilla oak. It's smooth and seamless, with a creamy, buttery and finely textured palate of length and harmony, finishing long and savoury.

Bright straw-green; a high-quality wine that is at peace with its maker - and itself; the components are harmoniously balanced, yet are quite vocal, notably the white peach, grapefruit and nectarine flavours on the long palate

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
A lovely wine with real focus; restrained aromas of lemon, nectarine and a lick of toasty oak; the palate is clearly defined, very long and extremely powerful on the finish.

Ken Gargett (2005 Vintage) says
Cartoonist Michael Leunig has done a lot of good things in his time but helping to inspire this fabulous Macedon winery is right up there. In its short history, it has earned a reputation for stunning pinot and chardonnay, and this is one of the best yet. In France, they wouldn't let you look at a bottle this good for this money, let alone drink it. Wonderfully complex with the texture and length that characterises exceptional chardonnay.

Good colour; a very complex, funky/savoury bouquet leads into a powerful palate, again complex, and driving through to a long, haunting finish.

The first screw cap (was also available under Diam) in a retrospective back to 1998 was not much different in colour from its corked brethren but a leap up in youthful delicacy gone was the honey instead more floral and oatmeal fresher fruit in a more refined aroma. the palate is elegant fine with delicacy without the thick development of prior, the flavours concentrated as always but delicate in texture and finish

Deep bronze antique gold smelling of quince, poached autumn fruits complexity. Medium long with lovely texture low key flavours and a clean finish very tidy balance with fine long preserved pear nectarine fruit finish. Very smart for a 11 year old Australian Chardonnay.

Vibrant yellow-green; the complex bouquet has tangy, bottle-developed, barrel-fermented inputs, but is still quite youthful overall; the tight, elegant palate marries citrus and honeydew with subtle oak. Most impressive.

Deep mid gold colour with burnt blonde toffee and grilled nuts and pale marmalade crystalline fruits.Unctious with good line of fruit gentle in texture and character with preserved fruits and pomengranite ditters cake. Exotic developed flavours.
