Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Estate-grown; open-fermented, 4% whole bunches, three-day cold soak, wild yeast, 20 days on skins. French oak (25% new) for 20 months. The bright crimson colour and fragrant bouquet lead into a supple, full-flavoured (cherry/plum/spice) palate with immaculate length and balance. Will stand tall against its forebears

An outstanding release from Curly Flat. Silken, highly aromatic, has fruit depth and yet it’s light on its feet, racy almost, and correspondingly lengthy. This is a Curly Flat Pinot Noir for the true believers. Fleshy, succulent, deep, smooth and spicy. A standout.

A delightful and characterful pinot noir, its spicy allure accented by this cool season  without detrating from seamless, juicy red fruit flow, finely textured mouth feel and great persistence. A triumph.

“Curly Flat is now a mature estate heading into its prime. This is a delicate pinot noir. Restrained. Earthen. Savoury. All good things. Flavours of cherries and mint, brown bread and crushed dry spice. Fine, firm tannin gives it a discipline. Minerally, steely tannin. Water-based rather than alcohol-based, as pinot noir should be. Gorgeous, flavoursome, sappy length. Oak adds texture and polish. Excellent.”

Wonderful limpid ruby of fine pinot noir with complex aromas of floral, mineral and savoury with rose and strawberry and some crunchy stemmy and oak notes in the back ground. Grows in the glass revealing the balance and delicacy that we have come to expect of this producer. The youthfully silky palate is very soft fruit sweet, with fine underlying acidity, good depth of complex middle palate and youthful firm tannin finish. Fun to drink now but great to keep to see the fruit soften the flavours, expand and gain more silk, length and depth. The palate on this wine is superb always very consistent expression of the silky tannins and mouth filling quality of fine pinot with with concentrated red and black cherry often with a floral spice a great line in acidity and fresh pinot varietal character with understated oak and stalk character. When tasted in 2013 a wine to drink from 2015 on.

Healthy, clear red-purple; offers a mix of spicy/savoury and French oak nuances running through the plum and red cherry fruit of the bouquet; the palate is perfectly balanced, and the 22 months in 30% new French oak barrels were judged to perfection. WAK

Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says
2009 presented more than its share of challenges across Victoria, but high in the Macedon Ranges, it seems Curly Flat escaped unscathed. This is a pinot of restrained elegance, with a perfumed lift of rose hip and a core of bright red cherries. There are notes of brambles and a touch of French oak wood spice, which could use some years in the cellar to integrate. Firm, fine tannins, excellent fruit length and a robust Stelvin WAK closure guarantee that it will go the distance.

Bright mid garnet; a heady and hedonistic array of red and black fruits, Asian spices and subtle floral notes blend together on the bouquet; the palate is silky, deeply textured and layered, with a tightly wound core of super fresh fruit and mouth-watering acidity; long, silky and beautifully detailed, this will reward careful cellaring, but will be hard to leave alone.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Ripe and forward, this deeply scented pinot reveals alluring aromas of red flowers, berries, cherries and redcurrants backed by funky notes of smoked meats and musky spices. Smooth and silky, with a bright, juicy presence of red cherries and berries, it finishes with suppleness and balance, with good but not great length. It's likely to evolve powerful, meaty and rustic characters.

Bright, deep crimson; a pinot with everything where it should be, even the early picking/low alcohol; this has enhanced the fragrance of the wine without sacrificing ripe fruit flavours on the elegant, light-bodied palate.

Jeremy Oliver (2008 Vintage) says
Rather firm and tight, this sleeper of a pinot has an earthy, fiery, spicy and complex bouquet of dark cherries, redcurrants and plums backed by nuances of underbrush and animal hide. Medium to full-bodied, it's deeply flavoured and fractionally stewy, with a long, firmish palate of dark cherry/plum fruit, meaty and earthy undertones and a lingering spiciness.

Nick Stock (2008 Vintage) says
This Macedon Ranges wine speaks of its cool-climate origins and weighs in at a modest 12.6% alcohol volume. It's dark in the glass and offers foresty aromas of red berries, sap and smoke; some leaf and herbs also in the mix. The palate's taut, tangy and assertive, the oak driving a solid push. Finishes with chewy, green-tinged tannins. Needs time.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Good crimson-purple hue, although not 100% bright; as ever, a complex and powerful wine, with black cherry and plum up front, then spicy/savoury/forest notes accompany the fruit on the back-palate and finish. No doubting the security of the screwcap in protecting freshness.

Velvety red cherry blossom & cranberry fruits with complex forest floor, mushroom, star anise & green peppercorn spice. Soundy structured, svelte & varietal pinot noir.

Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
Fine, elegant and savoury, with an earthy, gamy and floral bouquet that reveals layers of spicy dark plum and cherries, polished cedary oak and fragrant notes of spice and leather. It's long, luscious and finely crafted, with a succulent presence of fresh plums and cherries underpinned by silky tannins. There is however a thread throughout the wine of a light herbal presence and a hint of raisin, suggesting a slightly uneven ripeness.

In the mainstream of the Curly Flat pinot style; supple, velvety red fruits open the story, and persist while complex spicy/foresty notes whisper in the background. Pleasure now or later.

Dark brooding black cherry, dark plum and loads of spice; very concentrated on the palate, and the fruit holds on and opens up over an extraordinarily long time.

Curly Flat is a meticulously managed vineyard currently converting its vines to biodynamic farming practices.2005 RELEASE The jury is out on this. It's all tense and bound in on itself, its fruit flavour and tannin scrunched up close - it's hard to get a good look at its face. This can mean that it's got a big future ahead of it. There are signs of malty, cedary oak and bright, cherried ripeness, the mix of flavours, sweet acids and tannins nicely balanced, DRINK 2013-2019.

Remember that goal the great Michael Voss kicked a few years ago against the hapless Pies from about four miles out (well, perhaps the centre square)? You knew he had it in him but it still came as a bit of a surprise. This is just like that. We know that Phil Moraghan and his team can do it; they've done it before and hey'll do it again, but it still comes as a delight. This is an absolutely terrific pinot.

Curly Flat is a meticulously managed vineyard currently converting its vines to biodynamic farming practices. 2004 RELEASE Easily the best Curly Flat pinot noir to date. It's steely, perfumed, powered by medium-weight cherry-plummed flavour and gorgeously cuddled in cedary oak. It has balance, varietal integrity, structure and power. DRINK 2012-2018.

A deep coloured wine with a mid brown rim. Fruit is more pure, with a savoury stemmy green edged spicy animale edge. The palate is full deep and ripe, long and wonderfully silky with class and appealing cherry pip, firm dry tannins to finish.

Distinctive brown rim with a good red centre.Meatstock and earthy aromas with no red fruits, all savoury age.The aplate is soft and silky, seductive in texture only medium long with gentle berry fruit in the middle and just starting to break up on the finsh.

James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Medium red-purple; with better depth than the 2000, and equally good hue; the complex bouquet has dark plum with some forest and game aromas; the rich and complex palate provides a replay, dark plum fruit on the mid-palate followed by a savoury finish; the presence of brettanomyces is quite possible, but doesn't spoil the enjoyment of the wine so far as I am concerned.

James Halliday (1998 Vintage) says
Excellent colour; the rich and complex bouquet oozes varietal fruit, the powerful, opulent and smooth palate with abundant dark plum flavour; very youthful still, and spotlessly clean. Remarkable wine.
