Surprisingly deep golden-orange colour. Toffee, ripe apple, banana bread, mandarin, ginger biscuits, faint metallic edge, candle wax and honeycomb scents. Complex, rich perfume, but not fully perfect pleasure, something keeping me on edge. Lush, sumptuous mouthfeel with slick, oily, mouth coating texture. Liquified orange marmalade, toffee licks, apricot cream, vanilla, ginger; this is what comes to mind. Again, a little metallic tang and acidity pokes out through the finish. It feels complex, rich, luscious, and most will love it for that, but to sit down and think over it, it’s not as composed or excellent as some years. Still, it’s quite the experience.

The full amber colour is very forward-developed. The bouquet is also forward and seems fully mature, with marmalade and barley sugar aromas, while the palate is high in sweetness but somewhat clumsy and disjointed, with some tannin grip. There's no doubt about the botrytis, the volume of flavour or sweetness, but it's a little short on finesse.

It's very intense and luscious, with a molasses-like note beneath its candied and quite toasty presence of raisined, syrupy fruit. Not for the long term.

winemaker's notes

Appearance: Bright golden.

Bouquet: Expressive aromas of cumquats, nectarines, apricots, mandarin peel with integrated fresh vanillin oak.

Palate: A medley of Botrytis fruit flavours, citrus, stone fruit, a touch of butterscotch with a glace pineapple tang to a long alluring palate. A fine balance of oak, sweetness and acidity that gives finesse to a powerful Botrytis spectrum.

Vintage conditions: Showers of rain in late February along with cooler temperatures following a hot dry summer instigated the onset of Botrytis across the vineyards. Regular showers of rain in the ensuing weeks allowed the Botrytis to flourish with harvesting taking place over a couple of weeks during April.

Winemaking: The fruit for the 2014 Noble One was once again selected from the same vineyards that have a long and prodigious history of producing fine examples of Botrytis Semillon given the right weather conditions. With regular visits to the vineyard in the months leading up to the harvest, this allows us to closely track the degree of Botrytis development and determine the perfect time to pick the fruit. The essence of flavours produced from each vineyard having their individual traits, we harvest, ferment and mature each parcel separately. Then we blend together these components to capture the exotic beauty of Noble One Botrytis Semillon.

Cellaring: This wine will continue to prosper and develop comp.
