2014 Dinny Goonan Semillon Sauvignon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

At first, we didn't believe it, but Dinny Goonan is a real person. What a great name!

Dinny planted vines on his property at Bambra, on the Geelong side of Victoria's Otway Ranges, back in 1990. But it wasn't until 2001 that the first Dinny Goonan wines were released, with the grapes going to other winemakers before that.

Even now the production is small, with a range focused on cool refreshing white wines (Riesling and this white blend mainly) and very spicy Shiraz.

We've stocked a few of the Dinny Goonan wines previously, but this is the first time we've tasted this Dinny Goonan Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, and it's such a clever wine.

Made in a 'Bordeaux blanc' style, this highly textural white wine was fermented in oak barrels, adding an extra layer of complexity to the super crisp fruit and making for an enjoyable drink.

James Halliday gave this wine 93 points and praised the 'seductive tropical fruit salad... kept trim by the acidity and minerality of the Semillon' noting that 'it all works well.

With the 2016 vintage finished at Dinny Goonan, the winery is keen to make some space in their shed and this 2014 needs to go. As a result, they've let us have some of this clever little wine for a ridiculous price.

Winemaker's Notes

This wine is a blend of 85% Semillon and 15% Sauvignon Blanc made in an oaked style.

Appearance: Pale yellow with light yellow-green hues.

Nose: Lemon, peach, lanolin and background oak flavours.

Palate: The palate is crisp and refreshing. Lemon sherbet, stone-fruit and nougat characters are stretched over a richly textured palate that finishes with a crisp acid tail and some lingering oak notes.

Serving suggestions: The Semillon Sauvignon goes well with fish, oysters, mussels and other shellfish and is a perfect pairing with Sushi. It likes light meats such as chicken, ham, duck, turkey and pork. Try it with spiced, stewed and roasted vegetables or salads with citrus based dressings and dried fruit and nuts. Look for richly flavoured and nutty cow’s milk and sheep’s milk cheeses such as Gruyere and Cheddar.
