The people at Escarpment told us that this wine is only available in limited supply, we’re not sure if it’s because they are ruthless in their selection, or because the staff snap up most of it up. We suspect it may be the latter as it shows all the good characteristics that you look for in a good Pinot Noir – a perfumed nose, with an irresistible combination of black, red and green fruit flavours and a silky smooth mouth-feel. This wine is perfect with roast duck, and our spies in Martinborough tell us the local butcher’s has put his kids through private school with the profits from his game meat sales.

Winemaker's Notes

Perfume, elegant fruit flavours, and soft ripe tannins are all hallmarks of this exceptional Pinot Noir.

Perfect weather in Martinborough during flowering in December 2013 resulted in an ideal crop which did not require thinning.

An ideal summer followed creating the distinctive Escarpment style showing complexity, attractive texture and the perfect mix of black, red and green fruit flavours for which Pinot Noir is celebrated. The fruit was hand harvested, fermented using indigenous yeasts then gently handled without pumping until it was pressed. Hand plunged every 12 hours then left to macerate on skins for an average vat time of 19 days. It has been aged completely in French oak barriques, of which 30% were new, for 11 months.

Inspired by the classic wines of Burgundy, this Pinot Noir is a tribute to Martinborough’s unique terroir. It will cellar gracefully for up to 10 years.

Larry McKenna s boldly structured 2010 impresses with its deep, spiced wild cherry and dark plum fruit with hints of roasting game, raspberry top notes, shiitake broth, lightly smoky oak and wafts of undergrowth. It possesses a mouth-watering acid line, gravelly, long-chain tannins and a finish that lingers beautifully, balancing on the fulcrum of complexity and latent power.

The 2005 was one of my wines of last year (94 points) and so I was desperate to get my mitts on this. It's made by Larry McKenna, one of the stars of New Zealand pinot noir (even though he's an expat Aussie). 2006 RELEASE Heavy for a pinot noir but, hey, when the quality is as good as this, it can be whatever it wants to be. Dark, saturated cherry flavours are infused with Asian spice and sap, notes of pepper and dried meat popping in among the wine's sizeable structure. Rather impeccable, really. DRINK 2011-2017.
