The Wilyabrup sub-region in Margaret River makes some of the best wines in the country - and this 2014 Flametree SRS Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the absolute best.
The SRS (Sub-Regional Series) range celebrates great vineyards, with this superb Cabernet sourced from a block at the old Wilyabrup Estate vineyard. In the winery, it was wild fermented, hand-plunged and spends a massive 30 days on skins, before maturation in 57% new French oak for 15 months.
That uber high quality winemaking has translated into a stunning Margaret River Cabernet, one that has wooed just about everyone. Gary Walsh noted what a 'golden run Flametree SRS Cabernet has had since its inception in 2010' describing this 2014 as 'beautifully turned out' (Gary gave it 94+ points).
Huon Hooke also liked it, marking it as his 3rd favourite 2014 Margaret River Cabernet and also gave it 95 points. Oh and it has a gold medal from the Perth Wine Show to boot.
Black fruit, black tea and dark chocolate, violets and baking spices, with just a flicker of mint and tobacco leaf. Medium bodied, firm and precise, it has depth, but no carries no excess luggage. Red and black fruits to taste, grainy and gravelly tannin, crisp acidity, and a fine long finish. Beautifully turned out.2019 - 2028+
Deep, dark red colour with a purple tint and a fragrant ripe, rich, dark berry and chocolate aroma, with some earth and dried herb background notes. The wine is full-bodied, profound and has heaps of potential. It's concentrated and firmly structured, powerful and long. A wine of great potential. It just needs time.2019 - 2037
2014 Vintage: The 2014 season was long and warm with several heat spikes experienced during the growing season. Fruit set was very good, providing for even ripening of crops, and the extended hang time possible resulted in impressive flavour concentration and ample ripe tannins. The 2014 vintage has produced opulent flavoured wines with all the perfume, colour and structure you’d expect to see in great Margaret River Cabernet vintages.
Vineyards: The fruit was sourced from the famous Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, long regarded as the benchmark sub-region for Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet parcel was machine harvested, from the wonderful Wilyabrup Estate vineyard on Puzey Road. This vineyard is situated on a beautiful piece of east/north-east facing gravel. The soils are typically very bony on top with gravel/quartz sub-soils underneath. The clone used for this Cabernet hails from old Houghton cuttings.
Winemaking: Because the fruit was picked so clean with the selective harvester we were able to tip the individual parcels directly into a small open top fermenter without putting the fruit through a traditional crusher de-stemmer. After a few days, as the fruit warmed up and the wild ferment kicked in, we started working the cap by hand for soft tannin extraction and aeration. Ferment temperatures were maintained around 28°C. After extended skin contact (30 days) the wine was pressed into 57% new French oak for 15 months maturation.
Tasting Notes: This is a classic Wilyabrup Cabernet Sauvignon; medium to full bodied with a powerful, long, flavoursome palate and fine grained tannins to finish. The nose and palate reveal wonderfully concentrated berry fruits - blackberry, cassis, red currants and mulberry - with dark chocolate undertones. The palate also displays elegance and freshness, with a beautiful balance of fruit and oak flavours, the result of 15 months oak maturation. This vintage will drink beautifully now as a young wine, however a wine with this much fruit and extract will also mature wonderfully for the next 10-12 years.
